SERA/SETRA/Mid-South C'ship Winter HS Series Round 7: Triple-Sanctioned SE Cross Country Shootout OfJummtJrs (Winter OfJizzle I (Leftl The "Summers Sizzle" started on the sec:ond lap, when he made the fastest lap time. Summers took the lead on the third lap and went on to win the Southeast Cross Country Shootout. (Rightl Jason Raines made the podium at Reynolds Pasture in his first-ever rac:e in Alabama. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEBBIE ALLEN MAPLESVILLE, AL, JAN. 12 f?},n a cold day in Maplesville, ~ Alabama, Scott Summers briefly came out of retirement to race with 27 other AA riders at the triple-sanctioned SERA/SETRA/Mid-South hare scrambles. Barry Hawk, Jason Raines and Randy Hawkins also joined in to try their hands at the Pirelli Tire/ Moose/Parts Unlimited/White Brothers-sponsored event. All four claimed to get a slow start one way or another, but Summers heated up his Honda and took the lead and went on to win. "This brought back a lot of memories for me," said Summers. "I really enjoyed the thrill of racing today. It's been three years since I have raced, and it was just like when I first started out: fun:' The Scott's Performance Productssupported Summers took his time taking the lead. Raines got the holeshot, taking an inside line, and Sarge's Cycles/Team Green Kawasaki/GPR/Oakley / Alpinestars-supported P.A. Allen was charging closely beside him, taking an outside line. Allen overshot a turn, and Hawk moved into second. Summers was somewhere back in the pack, but he came through the score tent in fourth place at the end of the first lap. Hawk was in the lead; Allen and Raines were second and third. During their second lap, Summers was cooking with oil. Riding his XR650 Honda, he got the fastest lap time and maneuvered his way into second place. Later, he moved into first place and battled with the MidSouth lappers until the bitter end to maintain his lead. "It was very difficult to get around the C riders," said Summers. "As soon as you would get around one, another one would be in your way." As the front-runners moved into the lapped traffic, they understood the meaning of the Mid-South's challenge. Getting around about 200 Novice riders is not an easy task. "It was really tough today with the lappers," said M-Pro Yamaha/ Bridgestone Tires/MSR/Scott-backed Raines. "There were some places where they just couldn't get out of the way. They wanted to get out of the way, but they couldn't. Then it was really hard to be patient, because you would watch Summers or Hawk get around them while you're still stuck behind them." good race. Scott got first, I got second, and Raines got third." "This is the first time I have ever raced in Alabama," said Raines, "and I'm pretty happy with how everything turned out. I feel very fortunate to be a part of the great series, the MidSouth. I know it's a huge series, and there are a lot of competitors here." The next two were Mid-South riders Blair Bersano and Allen. Bersano got by Allen at the end of the second lap when they stopped for gas. Allen pulled into the pit first, but FMF Suzuki/Lowe Racing/Maxxis/lronman rider Bersano was the first to leave. After that, Allen couldn't get back around him. They finished the Southeast Cross Country Shootout in fourth and fifth place in overall. There were nearly 700 SERA, SETRA and Mid-South riders compet- Barry Hawk manhandled his Yamaha into sec:ond at the SERAlSETRAlMid-South triplesanctioned event in Maplesville. During the third and fourth laps, Summers stayed in the lead, but he struggled with the lappers until the finish. As soon as he pulled a good lead, a lapper would slow him down. Thus ended his race; A lapper entered the score tent first, slowing him down and giving Hawk just enough time to try to squeeze into a first-place finish. It didn't happen. Summers had the lead, and Hawk took a very close second place. "It was a good battle all the way to the end," said Morgantown Yamaha's Hawk. "Scott beat me, and he rode really well today. He was a half a bike's length in front of me, so he beat me fair and square. It was a ing on Reynolds Pasture throughout the day. Among those riders was John Friedli, in the Golden Masters' class. He has been riding at Reynolds Pasture for 28 years. "I think I won the old man's class," he said. He did. He made three laps in two hours and finished the race in first place in his class. SETRA rider Glenn Brock followed in second. It was a fast track that had a little bit of everything. The 11-miJe course had sand, mud, roots, rocks, creeks, and woods riding. The Perry Mountain Motorcycle Club did a very good job of laying out a great trail, and they appreciated the participation of all in attendance. eN cue I e Reynolds Pasture Maplesville, Alabama Results: January IZ, 2003 (Round 71 O/A: I.
