GFI North Winter Series Round 1: Hollister Hills GP Track Bv JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS PHOTOS BV JIM ENOS HOlliSTER, CA, JAN. 18-19 'i7 he rain-delayed U 2003 GFl North opener of the Winter Series, presented by Swift Dodge Sacramento, finally got under way as pictureperfect weather finally descended upon Northern California. Among the hundreds of eager racers who made their way to the Hollister Hills GP Track, Jeff Northrop and Eric McCrummen set the speed standard in the Pro and Intermediate classes, respectively. The Northern Series, featuring factory contingency from Honda, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha, was testing out a new format: All the Pros and big-bike Intermediates ran on Saturday (following a half-day of open practice), while all the remaining classes ran on Sunday. Northrop, aboard a Team Green/ Concord Kawasaki £, Yamaha/Fox/ Pro Circuit-backed KX, grabbed the holeshot in the first 125cc Pro moto on Saturday, followed by Adam Miller, David Boothe, Craig Truglio and David Gassin. While Northrop and Miller began putting a gap on the rest of the field, all eyes were on Gassin, who was making his Pro debut. Things were going well for the rookie, as he made his way by Boothe and then capitalized on a fall by Truglio to take over the third spot, where he would finish, just ahead of Travis Marks and Eric Nye. Northrop managed to hold off a persistent Miller for the win. Northrop was again out front and in control in moto two. A battle for second developed among Miller, Nye and Truglio. The trio went at it for most of the 10-lap event, while Boothe followed up in the fifth spot. Gassin had troubles after a poor start and eventually pulled off and headed to the pits. At the checkers, Northrop sealed the overall, followed by Nye. Miller rounded out the top three yet secured second overall with a 2-3 score, over Nye's 4-2 effort. "I came out to try and make a little money today and have always done well on this track in the past, so I had quite a bit of confidence out there," said Northrop. "I'm riding some older bikes today, and that made it a little tough, but I ended up in good shape and never really got challenged." In 125cc Intermediate action, McCrummen put his Race Tech/Mach 1 Motorsports/Posey Racing/TCRbacked KTM out front from the onset and never looked back as he dominated moto one, ahead of class rival Cory McDaniel. Moto two was a different story; McDaniel put his DH Cycles/JN Innovations/Posey Racing/Alpinestarsbacked RM out front, while McCrummen got off to a sixth-place start. However, McCrummen was on a tear, and by lap five of the eight-lap event, he had caught McDaniel. The two then swapped the lead several times until McCrummen finally made a pass that stuck for the win. "In that first one, I got a great start and just raced the track," McCrummen said, "but that second moto was fun, and I knew Cory would be there because he's a good rider, and we always seem to have a good, hard race every once in a while. We're both strong riders, and J just concentrated on mistake-free laps - and it paid off." The sun made yet another welcome appearance on day two, as the big-bike Beginners and Novices - as well as all the 50cc, 60cc, 80cc and Supermini riders - got to shine. In 125cc Novice action, Corey Pennington topped a talented 28-rider field, putting together consistent 2-2 finishes for the overall. Piloting an All-American Suzuki/BR J /Fox/Rock Oil/Spy- backed RM, Pennington made a last-lap pass on Jared Morrison and followed dominant moto winner Justin Woods across the finish line in moto one. In moto two, Yamaha pilot Wesley Norris shot out front and took command. After finishing fourth in moto one, Norris was looking for a topthree finish, while Woods, Pennington (Left) KTM-mounted Eric McCrummen won both 125cc Intermediate motos at the Hollister Hills GP Track. (RIght) Cory Pennington flew to the 125cc Novice overall in Hollister, California. 28 FEBRUARY 12. 2003' cue • • ne..,s and Garrett Henderson fought over the second spot. Things got intense as Pennington sneaked by Woods on the inside while at the same time Henderson was coming around the outside of Woods; Woods went down and nearly took Henderson with him, ending his shot at the overall. Meanwhile, Norris took the win, and his 4- 1 efforts sewed up second overall on the day. FMF/IRS-backed Justin Enos scored the 80cc Intermediate win over Kawasaki pilot Kyle Kent. Enos took the first-moto win while Kent carded a third after falling late in the race while running all alone in second. Kent rebounded in moto two and opened up a gap on the field, but Enos put on a late-race charge, and the duo went down the last straight· away side by side; at the checkers, Enos came sliding across the finish line - albeit on the ground after losing the back end - just half a bike length eN behind Kent.
