Chaparral AMA Pro/Am Championship Glen Helen Raceway Park (Leftl Cral9 Anderson (109) takes the lead in the very first turn of the 125cc Pro main on Saturday at the seventh annual AMA Pro/Am Championship at Glen Helen Raceway. He went on to win the event. underneath, using Anderson as a berm. Instead, he stuffed it and stalled, only a few dozen yards from the finish. Elated, Anderson motored home the winner, and suddenly Sellards was watching more than just the firstplace prize money ($4300) blowing away, as Georgia's Matt Walker was suddenly given the opening he needed to move into the runner-up position after having spent much of the early race "trying to get used to the track," in his words, on his Pro Circuit Kawasaki. Sellards did recover soon enough to get credit for third. It was really an outstanding weekend for a variety of other racers as well, with Honda's minicycle sensation Mike Alessi dominating (as he has all season long), capturing overalls in every class he entered on all three days, and taking the Pro-Am Championships in the 80cc (14-16) and Supermini classes. Other riders who swept all three days in their classes were Trent Pugmire, in the 80cc (4- 11) class; Ryan Villopoto, in the 80cc (12-13) class; Women's Intermediate rider Elizabeth Bash; Women's Novice rider Tanya Elbers; top Women's Beginner Janice Welch; Four-Stroke Beginner winner Eric Warrington; and Rick James, in the 125cc Novices. In the showdown for the 250cc Intermediates, Jeff Loop and Cody Hertel apparently tied for the overall with 17 points each after Micky Griffin crashed several times in Sunday's outing after coming in with a two-day total of only three. eN STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOHN BETHEA SAN BERNARDINO, CA, DEC_ 27-29 ~~ t was the only chance I had," ~ explained Georgia's Brock Sellards about his collision with Yamaha racing teammate Craig Anderson of Australia in the final turn of the last lap of the $10,000 125cc Supercross Invitational at Glen Helen Raceway, the highlighted event of a three-day extravaganza. Anderson, like Sellards, was in Southern California a week early in preparation for the upcoming AMA Supercross Series, and several thousand fans came out to take in the show, which covered stadiumcross, grand prix and motocrOSS racing for Sportsmen and Pros who hungered for one last chance at topping off the season. In the Saturday afternoon showdown, Anderson took the lead in the very first turn of the 20-lap main event, and Sellards emerged as his prime opponent by lap three. They stuck to each other as if tied by a very short tether. "I knew Brock would pick it up in the last three laps: said Anderson, who plans to race the entire Supercross Series to, in his terms, prove himself to the American public. Anderson was constantly being poked and prodded by his Yamaha of Troy teammate, lap after lap, to the point that Sellards was getting anxious. "I could never get close enough [to make a pass]: Sellards explained, "because we both were using the same lines." With two laps to go, Sellards decided to go for broke. Just as the white flag was about to unfurl, Sellards got extremely close to Anderson's rear wheel in the final turn, as he was apparently testing the turn. He got within striking distance several times but was frustrated. Then, in the final turn, he went for it, trying to dive 54 FEBRUARY 5, 2003' eye 61en Helen Raceway Park San Bernardino, California Results: December 27-29, 2DD2 Friday Stadiumcross P/W SHAFT: 1.
