Florida Winter Am Series Round 3: Motocross of Marion County Brian Gray swept the Pro classes at round three of the 32nd annual Florida Winter Am Series. STORY AND PHOTOS BY CRAIG AND ANGELA JOHNSON REDDICK, FL, JAN. 11-12 louds seemed to hang around all day, and a rider named Brian Gray did the same. Gray never led from the start, but somehow the lead would be his at the end. Gray tracked down his competitors and took four moto wins to take the overalls in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes on the weekend. The grand reopening of Motocross of Marion County was a huge success. Riders traveled from near and far for round three of the 32nd annual Florida Winter Am Series. There were still a couple of the old obstacles to fourth, and Carsten finished fifth. Bryan Johnson led the second moto over Keith, Gray and Adams. The four tussled for the lead, with Matt Karlsen back in fifth. Keith got the lead, but Bryan challenged at the off-camber. When they came out in front of the fans, Bryan was leading, and Gray was second. Keith had dropped to third, as Adams waited his turn. Due to bike problems, Bryan dropped out. Gray took the win. Keith was runner-up. Adams and Karlsen moved up to third and fourth, and Carsten took another fifth. The best show of the day was the 125cc Pro class. Perebijnos took the holeshot, ahead of Bryan, Gray, Adams and Ryan Davis. Perebijnos pulled away the first couple of laps, Bryan Johnson (left) and Nick Adams (160) battle in the first 125cc Pro moto at Motocross of Marion County. be seen, but the majority of the track had been redesigned to keep it safe but still challenging. A total of 539 riders turned out to try their luck. The first Pro class to run was the 2505. Nick Adams grabbed the lead, with Gray, Barry Carsten, Keith Johnson and Paul Perebijnos in tow. Adams and Gray pulled out. By lap three, Gray had passed and pulled away en route to the win. Johnson passed Carsten and, toward the end of the moto, crept up on Adams, but the Yamaha pilot kept Johnson at bay to the finish. Perebijnos took leaving Bryan, Gray and Adams to battle for second; however, that lead didn't last long, as the three riders pulled up behind him. Perebijn05 then made a costly mistake, and Bryan and Gray both passed him. Adams got past Perebijnos on the next lap. Gray pressured Bryan, while Adams was waiting his turn. Gray found his opening on the back part of the track and took the lead with a few laps remaining. Bryan relaxed too much after Gray passed him, and Adams closed in for second. Adams pushed Bryan out of a corner to claim the spot. A lap later, however, Adams fell in a rutted corner. Gray won with about a three-second lead, and Bryan held off Adams for second. Keith, who started in 13th, battled all the way up to fourth. Perebijnos held on to fifth. The second 125cc Pro moto was a barn-burner to the end. Bryan took the lead. Carsten slipped into second, and Perebijnos was third. Adams and Gray were in fourth and fifth, and both quickly displaced Perebijnos. Keith was in sixth. Adams passed Carsten, and it took Gray another lap to do the same. The top three were only four seconds apart. Adams took the lead in the middle of the track. With the three front-runners running a steady pace, Keith crept back into the picture by the halfway flag. Gray pulled to within three seconds, and Bryan challenged Adams for the lead. The two front-runners went side by side over the anthill, and Bryan recaptured the lead. Adams came up short over the double and Gray closed in on the Yamaha rider. Bryan held a two-second lead, and the fight was for second. Gray took the correct line coming out of the off-camber and captured second. Keith was back on the gas after a midmoto break and was reeling in the leaders. Bryan was trying to protect the inside, as Gray started pressuring from behind. After the finish-line jump, Gray took the outside in the next corner but gassed it to the inside, as Bryan's momentum took him to the outside of the next corner. Gray let it all hang out down the rough straight to take the lead. With all the commotion up front, Keith joined the freight train. With less than a lap and a half to go, it seemed they all took different lines in the off-camber. Gray retained the lead, but Keith motored into second. Adams kept third, while Bryan slipped to fourth. On the last lap, Keith tried his line again for first, but Gray gassed it up the bumpy straight to take the win. Keith and Adams held second and third, and Bryan took a disappointing fourth. eN MX of Marian County Reddick, florida Results: January 11-12, 2003 [Round 3 of 5J 50 STK (4·6): 1.
