Zach Hyatt put his KTM in so the class wasn't a Kawasaki clean sweep. The 80cc (12-15) contest was Chris Hollingsworth's territory, as he put his Yamaha in the first-place spot. Honda-mounted Nathan Collins kept Suzuki jockey Cory Dowda at bay for second. The Supermini 80- 1OSee class was owned by Honda rider Jase Lewis, as usual, with Yamaha-mounted Hollingsworth keeping the hauling Honda of Collins in third. The Youth (12-15) division was another Jase Lewis benefit, with Freewheeling Honda's Clayton Henderson making the first two places a "red rider" show. Kawasaki's Richie Gibson finished a strong third and let the Honda boys know that they couldn't dominate. Southern Extreme Motocross Park The 125cc C war was another "red rider" Anderson's Assault feature, with Henderson the top finisher. Henderson's good starts paid off, so everyone hopes he gets a new helmet visor for the holidays. Jonathan Eller finished second, with Chris Castle keeping the podium celebration By J" Y IRVIN VIDAUA, GA, DEC. 28 Three states were represented at Southern Extreme Motocross Park's season finale. Track owner Allen Campbell and his crew gave the riders a great stage on which to do battle. Mother Nature also did her part by providing perfect, sunny conditions throughout the day. There was great racing to be found in all classes. Statesboro Cycle rider Stephen Anderson put in the most dominant performance of the day, piloting his YZ250F to victories in the highly competitive 125cc B and Money races. He grabbed ail four holeshots and never looked back, leading every lap in every one of his motos. Although Anderson was a notch above the competition on this day, the racing for the runner-up spot was nothing less than spectacular. In the 125cc B motos, Florida's Matt Antonio and Honda ace Cody Zorn went head to head. While the two swapped positions several times, Antonio stayed consistent and held on to the second spot. Zorn took third, and Savannah, Georgia's J.J. Nakelski was a very close fourth. These riders lined up to do battle once again in the Money class. Again Anderson nailed the start and checked out from the field in the opening laps. The fast trio of Antonio, Zorn and Nakelski were left to fight for the final podium positions. Antonio and Zorn had trouble in the early stages of the race, allOWing Nakelski to build a sizable lead and settle comfortably into the second spot. Though Zorn was unable to continue, Antonio mounted a charge for second place, but the laps ran out before he could make a play for it. Another double-class winner on the day was Beaufort, South Carolina's Skeeter Dean, who took wins in the 250cc C and Over 40 classes. Hannah Twilley put in a strong perfor· mance in the 65cc class. She was unstoppable, winning both motos and taking the overall win. Kawasaki rider Taylor Holt gave chase in both motos but was no match for the an all-red affair. The 125cc Beginner race was also a good one, as Suzuki rider Matt Bo.okout kept Yamaha·mounted Scott White in second. Honda rider Zach Thigpin was third after waiting for a mistake from the front two. Keep a lookout for Bookout in the future, because he's coming on strong. D.C. Thomason, as usual, took the wins in the 125cc and 250cc A classes. Thomason is the hardest· racing Pro around; he raced the day before and only got in two laps of late practice because the other race was in another state. A fali in one moto dropped Thomason to fifth, but a hard charge got him back to the front before the end. Jason Edwards of Over The Top Racing kept Honda CRF450R rider Michael Henderson in the runner-up spot in the Over 30 class. Steve Matthews made it another "red rider" podium. Once again, the Kellys put on a good event. The track was the best, as it always is, and the program went smoothly. A good bit of fuel was saved, as the ambulance wasn't cranked up all day, and the weather was a record upper-60s - not bad for December. Results PfW SHAFT: 1. Al~x Barnes (Yam); 2. They went one-two_ lightning-fast Twilley. Another Kawasaki rider, Nick Skipper, rode to take third place. Sarah Rewis came home fourth. In the 85cc class, Gatlin Daniel steered his way to the top of the podium by controlling the field and winning both motos. Reese Grantham took second overall, just ahead of the ever-persistent Twilley. Yamaha rider Clark Fortner and A.J. Morgan rounded out the top five. The Over 30 class was one of the larger groups of the day, as well as one of the most action-packed. Each moto provided some of the day's most intense battles. Trey Gardner took both moto wins. Honda riders Ron Twil· ley and David Rewis shadowed Gardner all day but apparently couldn't rattle his cage. Ron put in two steady rides, capturing the second spot. Rewis was forced to settle for the number-three position. Ivan Rose rode as hard as anyone on the track, but being on a less-powerful 125cc machine proved to be a disadvantage on the wide-open Southern Extreme circuit. Results 65; 1. On the last lap, Maier charged hard but came up short as Hodges barely held on for the win and the cash. In the 125cc main event, Jump-Off contest winner Ryan Poulter got the holeshot, followed closely by Shawn Morgan and Maier. Morgan took the lead momentarily before Maier took over and began to pull away. Maier's lead continued to grow while Morgan tried to hold off Poulter for second place. Maier got the easy win, with Morgan in second, followed closely by Poulter in third. In the 250cc main, Hodges got another holeshot, followed closely by Maier. Morgan was in third out of the start but pulled off after a couple of laps, leaving third to Justin Anderson, who was being pressured by fourthplaced Waiton. Hodges continued to hold off Maier. who was constantly looking for a way to get by. Ripple came from an eighth-place start to quickly make his way through the pack. Ripple passed Walton and Anderson and established himself in third place. Anderson continued to battle with Walton for fourth place, as Ripple pulled away in third. Maier finally found his way around Hodges and began to pull away immediately. Maier's wins came two weeks after he battled it out with some of the National Arenacross Series' top competitors at the opening round. Maier rode his Team Green D&S Kawasakis to the 125cc and 250cc Pro-class wins on Friday night. In the 125cc class, he was followed across the line by Kurt McCabe in second and Travis Hodges in third. In the 250s, Todd Walton followed Maier across the line, with Andy Thyberg in third. Brad Ripple aiso put in a couple of good rides, getting fifth in the 125cc class and fourth in the 250s. On Saturday night, Maier picked up right where he left off on Friday, winning both his 125cc and 250cc heat races. Ripple looked very fast in the whoop section on his way to his 125cc and 250cc heat-race wins. In the Dash For Cash, Hodges got the IMX Arena: Travis Hodges (501) battles the hard-charging Teddy Maier (311) in the 250cc main event at the second round of the IMX Indoor Motocross Series in Farley, Iowa.
