the pack at bay and went on to win. Dave Wappler finished second, with Pete Walschlager third. Scott Bushman took his four-stroke Yama~ ha to the 250cc B win over Mark Schmidt, on the two-stroke Yamaha. Schmidt reversed the order by winning the 200cc B class on his 125cc Yamaha, while Bushman finished second on his brother's 125cc Honda. The Pro Vet class is open to any Pro or A rider over the age of 30, on any size motorcycle. It was battle royal between Farrell and Cliff Eckes. On the second lap, Eckes charged by Farrell and led to the white flag. On the back stretch, Farrell moved by and went on the take the checkered flag. Bean took third, with Brad Seavers fourth. Wollin wasted no time moving to the front of the 250cc Pro class. Bean tried both the inside and outside lines to get by but fell short. Strangfeld ran in third but was overtaken by Eckes on the third lap, by Seavers on the fourth lap, and by Young at the finish line. Last up was the Open Pro GP or TT race. The track is laid out by turning right at the end of the front straight. Then it is left, right, a sweeping left, a sharp right, and left again to lead onto the back straightaway of the main track. Off the line, Farrell charged into the first corner, with Strangfeld on his back wheel. This final event was shortened to two laps because of the encroaching darkness, so everyone was charging. Farrell led again on the second lap, and he got to the checkered flag first. Farrell was the event's big winner, picking up three Pro victories and the cash that went with them. Rasults Claremore Expo Arena: Danny Eslick was the Open Pro winner at round two of the Oklahoma Indoor Arena Race Series, in Claremore. more's own Russell Marlin wound up third, just ahead of Hinkle. Poor Hinds "bit the fudge" yet again and scored a DNF. But you can't crash 'em all, and Hinds' revenge on this Sunday afternoon was a hardfought win over a talented Mad Dog Mini field. At the flash of the green light, Hinds and Eslick were at each other's throats. Bumpin', bangin', pushin' and shovin', the two warriors asked and gave no quarter. In the end, Claremore's own Hinds defeated Eslick by the nar~ rawest of margins; going into round three, January 18th at the Creek County Fairgrounds facility, the two riders will be tied in points. Mounds, Oklahoma's Randy King finished third in the 15-lap event, ahead of Russ Marlin and Jeff Bostic. Sowders and Mark Ellingsworth rounded out the field. Brewster Tails No One BY DAN MAHONY CLAREMORE, OK, DEC. 15 Yahoo Racing's 2002-2003 Oklahoma Indoor Arena Race Series continued with round two at the Claremore Expo Arena. A slightly smaller turnout of riders than at the previous night's opening round was greeted by warm, sunny weather and a fast, tacky track. Owasso. Oklahoma's Jeff Brewster picked up where he left off the previous evening: with a dominating win in the Open Amateur class. The up-and·coming young rider turned back Jerry Post, Ian Washbum and Randall Gillette to finish first in the 12-lap event. Brewster also paced the field in the 125-250cc class, besting improving young Dylan Marlin, Gillette and Kevin Reed. Chargin' Charles Frazier wheelied his way to the win in the Vintage class. John Varbel, having missed round one of the series, made a good showing, finishing runner·up to Frazier. Tulsa's Derek Marlow finished third, while Harry Elzo scored a DNF. Pryor, Oklahoma's Dalton Marlin won the 51-100cc finai, but second-placed Fred Mattox took the class points lead due to his win on Saturday. Jesse Frazier finished third. Tye Kyles, riding out of the Adams Racing stable, took a win in the aocc class. With a second-place finish, Hunter King is tied with Kyles for the series point lead. Mattox finished third, over Devin Thompson. Local rider Aaron Gillette was the only 50cc Pee Wee to show up and thus added to his points lead. Danny Eslick of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, added to his Yahoo stash by outsliding hardriding Mike Hinds. Eslick's handlebar-dragging antics thrilled the rowdy crowd. Bret Sowders finished a solid third, ahead of Jeremy Hinkle. Different class, same story: It was Eslick again in the Open Pro go. Sowders put in his second good ride of the day, keeping it on two wheels when others about him couldn't. Clare- 36 .JANUARY 29, 2003 cue I Glen Helen Raceway Park rolled in second, just in front of Deterich. Sedler was fourth, while Rick Oliver moved up to fifth after a poor start. In mota two, Chris Alamangos snared the holeshot on his Honda CRF450 and set a good pace out front. There was a pileup behind him early in the race, and Alamangos made the best of it as he put a nice gap on the field. Oliver took advantage of the situation as well and settled into second place. right in front of third-placed rider Patrick Healy. Murphy was as far back as ninth, but he picked off riders each lap and eventually worked his way up to second place late in the contest. Oliver came in third. while Scanlan worked his way up to fourth by the end. Healy rolled in fifth. On the day, the overall class win went to Murphy by virtue of his 1-2 finishes. Scanlan was next best with a 2-4 posting. Aiamangos' second-mota win place him third with a 7 ~ 1 tally, while Oliver (5-3) was fourth, and Sedler (4-6) was fifth. Doug Dubach put on quite a performance in the 250cc Pro class aboard his Dr. D Yamaha YZ450F. After crashing hard on the opening lap of the first mota and then pulling off to straighten out his bent motorcycle, Dubach showed incredible determination as he charged through the pack and eventuaily pulled off a miraculous second-place finish, behind Mark Tilley. In the second go-around, Dubach ripped the holeshot and went on to win handily and to take the overall class win for the day with a 2- J score. Tilley (1-2) was second, and Kevin Townsend (3-3) was third. 65 BEG: 1. Caden Probst (Ktlw); 2. Nigel Crosby (Kaw). 80 BEG: I. Chris Edwards (Yam): 2. Cody l~yland (Yam); 3. Sean Friday (Yam): 4. Greensboro Coliseum Kemp Upsets Barlow at Round One By DONNEu.E MILNE O'NEILL GREENSBORO, NC,DEC.26 Cary, North Carolina's hometown favorite, Progressive Suspension's Ronny Kemp, came up with a perfect score and upset current ICE World Champion Anthony Barlow at the 2003 World Cup Ice Speedway Series opener at the Greensboro Coliseum. The top finishers in the first heat races were Kemp, Barlow and James Mann, all scoring perfect lOs. In heat one, Kemp stomped the competi· tion by getting the holeshot, leaving England's Will Beverage and New York's Paul Normandin to battle for second. Colorado's Aaron Laird was credited with fourth after the youngest competitor of the night jumped the tapes and then, on the restart, found himself with mechanical problems. In heat two, England's Mann stepped up for the win, leaving Cal Harrington, North Carolina's Robert Arms and Nevada's Bill Hermant battling for the remaining positions. Hermant got pushed into the outside slush and crashed hard on the ice, resulting in a broken nose and fourth place. England's Barlow showed why he's the current champion by winning heat three. The Dubach, Murphy Maul REM MX BY ROCKNE HASH SAN BERNARDINO, CA, DEC. 21 With Christmas Day just around the corner, an overcast sky made for perfect racing conditions as a large contingent of riders gathered for Racing Enterprises Motorsports' weekly Saturday motocross. Whitney Murphy bested a competitive field of 250cc Junior racers after putting in two solid motos aboard his Orange County Suzuki-backed yellow bike. In the first stanza, Judd Scanlan ripped the holeshot, with two other Honda riders· Paul Sedler and Evan Deterich - right behind. Murphy gated fourth, just in front of Husqvarna rider Matt Burroughs. Scanlan was able to open up a two-second gap eariy whiie Murphy pestered both Sedler and Deterich. About haifway, Murphy went around Sedler and moved into third place, right behind Deterich. After following him for one lap, Murphy made the pass on Deterich and moved up to second place. Scanlan was doing his best to "get gone" out front, but as the race wore on, Murphy closed in on him. With two laps to go, Murphy took over the point in the back canyon section of the course. Once out front, Murphy opened up a small lead and rode mistake-free to the checkered flag for the mota win. Scanlan e n e "" s Glen Helen Raceway Park: Whitney Murphy was the overall 250cc Junior winner at REM's weekly motocross event in San Bernardino, California.
