CMC Golden State Nationals Round 1: Forster Livestock Pavilion the Roostl (Left) Fonner full-time AMA National and Supereross regular Ryan Terlecki was the top Pro perfonner at the Golden State Nationals opener in Salem, Oregon, posting the 125cc and 250cc Pro wins. of the gate. and the 32-year-old would retain that lead to the finish. Gary Terlecki, the elder of the two Terlecki brothers, ran a solid second, fending off challenges from Pestana before taking the Over 25 Pro win, behind Over 30 winner Graves but ahead of Pestana and the secondplaced Over 30 rider, J.R. Meusling. Moto two was also a Graves runaway; he put substantial ground on Pestana in his double-moto sweep. Pestana bagged an overall win in the Over 25 class. Vielle rode the race of his life in the first 250cc Pro moto, assuming the lead at the start and using a large advantage early on in the 15-lap moto to narrowly edge Ryan at the finish. Ryan, Nye and Graves mixed things up in a squabble over second place for much of the moto until Ryan broke free and narrowed the gap on Vielle in the late stages. Vielle, though, gave the veteran Pro all he had and scored an impressive win, followed by Ryan, Nye, Graves, Gary, Pestana and Washington's Rod Tapia. Graves garnered the holeshot in moto two and held off advances from Ryan for almost the entire race. Ryan got squeezed out in the first turn but overcame that poor start to narrow the gap on Graves, but Graves rode flawlessly. Ryan shoved a wheel under Graves coming out of the final turn, bumping Graves out of the way and finalizing his overall win with a 2-1 tally. Graves (4-2) and Nye (3-3) STORV AND PHOTOS BV CLAV liGHT SAl.EJ\\, OR, JAN. 12 or 2003, Ryan Terlecki has decided to take a break from the grueling AMA National and Supercross schedule and stick closer to home. While this is bad news for the local competition, it produced a good-sized chunk of change for the Yamahamounted rider from nearby Stayton, Oregon, who was a two-class winner at the opening round of the CMC Golden State Nationals. Terlecki's wins were hardly a cakewalk, as several Californians and top-notch Northwesterners were on hand to challenge him. Yamaha rider Eric Nye and Honda jockey Jeff Pestana journeyed north from the Golden State, looking for a chunk of the contingency money offered by nearly all of the major manufacturers. Terlecki, riding the Lynnwood MotoplexjMaxxisjSinisalojGaernej Smith-backed YZ250F and YZ450F, won the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes overall, topping three of his four motos. His only loss of the day came in the opening 250cc Pro moto, which he lost to Washington's J.R. Vielle. Joining Terlecki in the Pro winner's circle were Oregon's Tony Graves, who won the Over 30 Pro class, and Pestana, who was victorious in the Over 25 Pro class. Other impressive performers on the day included KTM-mounted Travis McMackin, who topped the 125cc Junior and Before The Hill Junior classes; Gared Steinke, who garnered overall wins in the 60cc Senjor and 80cc (9-11) classes; and Pete Sannan, who celebrated his 16th birthday in a big way by winning the Schoolboy and 125cc Intermediate classes and also finishing second in the Before The Hill Intermediate class. The day's first Professional moto was the combined Over 30 and Vet (Over 25) Pro race. Riding the Herb's CycletownjFly-supported YZ450F, Graves grabbed the lead at the drop F 34 JANUARY 29. 2003' cue filled out the top three. Vielle crashed on the opening lap and went 1 -6, trailed by Pestana (6-4). Ryan got the jump on the field in the first 125cc Pro moto, followed by Graves, Pestana, Nye and Meusling. Nye put the hammer on Graves, sending him through the banners and on an off-track excursion, allowing the 17 -year-old Californian to settle into second. However, Ryan had already checked out, and he easily won. Graves overcame a deficit to nab Pestana late in the moto and garner third. Ryan took command of moto two, but a bobble from the former Husaberg factory rider allowed Graves to hold the point position, although Graves' lead was of short duration. Ryan took the lead back one lap later and remained there to the finish to finalize a 1-1 sweep and take home the top money for his efforts. Graves' 3-2 tally gave him second overall, followed by Nye (2-3), Pestana (4-4) and Meusling (5-5). Aaron McClinton, Jordan Mockridge and Californian Curtis Sweezey were among the elite in the Supermini class. Yamaha-mounted Mockridge manhandled the competition to lead McClinton and Sweezey overall. Controversy erupted in the 80cc (12- 14) class, as both McClinton and Mockridge were aboard big-wheel machines. Despite Mockridge's 1-2 tally, the win went to the Kawasakimounted Golden State rider Sweezey, aboard the top-placing standard 80cc machine. Nolan Beyer looked like a sure winner in the Bill's Motorcycles Husky Challenge race, but Beyer's lead didn't last long before the rider from Albany, Oregon, took a tumble, handing the lead to series front-runner Jonathan Andrew, who picked up the win, followed by Conner Mitchell, (Left) Pete Sannan celebrated his 16th birthday with two overall wins, topping the Schoolboy and Before The Hill Intennediate classes and also finishing second in the 125cc Intennediate class. (Right) Yamaha rider Jordan Mockrldge hammered the competition in both Supennini motos at Forster Livestock Pavilion. I ... n e vv s Blake McMackin, Ryan Burggren and eN Beyer.
