and this weekend was no exception. With the LOCAL TALENT points battles in both Expert and Amateur 80cc GP coming down to the wire, the stage was set for no-holds-barred action in both classes. In the morning Expert BOcc GP race. points leader Jeff Jones once again jetted to an impressive early lead, with Leonard Mellgren and Aaron Hammel chasing him down. Hammel, who had a mathematical chance of taking the class title away from Jones. was by far the quicker of the two. With Jones fading but safe in third, Hammel led Mellgren across the stripe to win. while Scott Cohea held down fourth. The afternoon race was a near-repeat of the morning's contest, with the exception of Rolando Quintero, who was a no-show in race one but was mixing it up with the leaders in race two. Hammel swept the overall. Quintero took second in the race. Mellgren came in third to take second overall, with Jones in fourth to take third overall and the class championship for 2002. proving that consistency pays off. TONY MONTENEGRO In race one of the Amateur eocc GP class, Dylan Raasch rode to a solid victory. with Corey Peterson and Anh Tuan Tran in hot pur- suit for second and third and T.J. Trevino following in a strong fourth. The much-anticipated race two lived up to expectations. Peterson was quickest off the line, just a few ticks in front of Trevino. While riding fiercely to hold off Trevino, Peterson high-sided dramatically, taking out Trevino in a spectacular end-aver-end crash that brought out the red flag. After some furious repair work. both riders were able to make the restart. On the restart. Raasch bolted into the lead. with Tran in second and Andrew Barnes in third. A battered Peterson fought back in fourth, while Trevino dropped out with mechanical problems. Tran low-sided out in tum one on lap two, allowing Raasch to race unchallenged to the overall win and the class championship. Barnes and Peterson finished second and third in the race. and that was the order in which they finished out the season. In the overall results of the day, Peterson was second, Barnes was third, Clint Soloman rode home in fourth, and Tran was fifth. Props go out to Josh Herrin for his sweep· ing "hat trick" in Amateur Stock. Formula 50 and Formula GP. earning his bump up to the Expert ranks. Results BEG STK: I. Si Souksangouane: 2. BIRTHDATE: SVRG Awards Banquet: The season-long "Battle of the Eds" concluded with Ed Stovin (left) edging out Ed Tashjian (second from right) for the SVRG number-one plate and the custom leather jacket t1hat goes with it. Champions Get Wood By RICK DOUGHTY ORANGE. CA. DEC. B In the shadow of Edison Field. where the AMA Supercross wars loomed only weeks away, the Southwest Vintage Racing Group capped off another season of on-track competition with its 2002 awards banquet. The "fastivities" have become a high point of the year, bringing racers and their families out of the dirt and into the fold for a celebration of the racing year remembered. 54 JANUARY 22. 2003· cue I e • Fort Lauderdale, Florida DISCIPLINE: • • • • • • • Road Racing 0nIE11 INTERESTSI •• Working in his An annual highlight is the tongue-in-cheek "Year in Review" video put together by Brad "Cecil B." Van Keuren. and this year's edition was the best yet. with a Steve McQueen Great Escape theme that brought down the house with laughter and applause. Van Keuren's season was cut short by a near-fatal injury, but his creativity and commitment to the organization have remained uninterrupted. Next up to bat was special guest speaker Paul "The Baz" Boudreau. who drove all the way from Palm Springs to attend. An original member of the Motocross Action team, Father Paul is now on the "God Squad" as an ordained Catholic priest. He imparted a humorously eloquent sermon on the evils of Suzuki TM400 Cyclones and the spiritual need to return prayer to the starting line at each and every Vintage motocross event. In his closing, Father Paul - who hasn't seriously ridden since his MXA days in the 1970s - agreed to saddle up as soon as "born-again heathen" Rick Doughty comes to mass. Other than spewing what looked like green pea soup as his head spun around. the SVRG president had no comment on the challenge. The banquet built to the moment that all were waiting for: the awards. Many trees gave up their lives this year to serve as wooden plaques! The names and smiles were many, while disappointments were limited to those who could not attend. Special award winners included Michael Johnstone and Ed Tashjian for "Best Crashes." Karen Doughty and Laura Anderson for "Best-Looking Volunteers," Derrick Contreras for "Best Recruiter" and Ed Stovin for "High Points Earner." The Spirit of SVRG Award. the organization's highest honor, went to John Van Mossevelde for his unyielding commitment to the ideals and principles on which the club was founded. With 2002 in the books. everyone is look· ing forward to the 2003 season opener at Glen Helen Raceway. CN Results SVRG Awards Banquet •• September 22, t 961 RESIDENCE: IRONMAN V1NT NOV: I.
