Eric Wood worked his way from a fourth·row
start to victory in the S 1500 Unlimited Grand
Prix event. By lap three, he had maneuvered
into first place and opened a gap on second·
placed Marco Martinez. Rick Narup had nailed
the holeshot but was relegated into a battle for
third place with Darren Luck, When the white
flag came out, Wood had an advantage of half
the front straight over Martinez. Earlier in the
day, Martinez had been plagued with motor
trouble, and he just couldn't catch him. On the
final lap, Luck passed Narup to finish third.
Wood traveled to Homestead as both a
competitor and an instructor for the familyoperated Penguin Racing School, which is run
at Homestead annually during the December
season finale. The Woodcraft/" 14k the
Movie- /Dunlop/Maxima/ Air· Tech-backed
Wood also won the first race of the day, the
GTO contest,
Eric's brother Jeff Wood won all three of
his classes· the GTU, Middleweight Super·
sport and Middleweight Superbike classes - by
nailing the early lead in each event and running away from the rest of the field. Their
father, Jerry, won the Ughtweight Grand Prix
and finished third in Heavyweight Sportsman
event.
Championships in 18 of the 38 classes
were confirmed at the time of this doublepoints event. with the remaining 20 contingent

Amateur racer, taking home three first-place
trophies for GT Ughts, Ughtweight Superbike
and Lightweight Supersport. He finished sec·
ond in Lightweight Grand Prix, behind Irish
import Mark Kelly.
Amateur racer Ralph Fernandez finished
the weekend with four flawless first· place fin·
ishes . more than any other competitor at the
track. He also holds the highly distinguished
undefeated title in the florida region, having
won every race he has run. Fernandez took
home the GTO Championship title with a
more-than-250-point lead over Davidson. He
was only in the points running for the GTO
class, after missing events at North Florida
Motorsports Park earlier in the year and falling
behind in points.
locked in as next year's number·one rider with
a more than 2000·point lead in the Expert
Overall Combined class, as well as the Unlim·
ited Supersport, GTU, Middleweight Super·
sport and Middleweight Superbike classes.
During the Saturday practice session, Luck
experienced mechanical trouble with one of
his machines and had to hunt for parts. but he
was running smoothly by race time, and he
scored enough points to win championships in
his remaining four classes· the GTO, Heavyweight Superbike, Heavyweight Supersport
and Unlimited Grand Prix classes. This
accomplishment placed him in a class all by
himself as the most victorious racer, with a
whopping total of nine championships.
In the Amateur Overall Combined category, James Davidson had a 486·point lead over
Alex Ferreira. However, Ferreira decided to
move up to the Expert field for the last race of
the year. He had already scored enough points

Grand Prix classes to win those championships without even having to run the races.
Ferreira won his first-ever Expert race, the GT
Ughts contest, and then continued on to win
the Lightweight Superbike event and finish
second in Ughtweight Supersport. Davidson
placed in the top lOin six of his races and
maintained his points lead over the remaining
competition to take home the Amateur Overall Combined Championship.
Ferreira's closest competitor. Terry Walker, was the weekend's second-winningest
