BY RANDY HElM TRACY, CA, NOV. 24 With Mother Nature playing her part, track conditions were just about perfect for round one of Mutant Motorsports' GP Series at the Carnegie track. The track was tacky all day, with no dust. The course also featured an additional section to make the track more exciting for the 3D-minute races. Some wondered if they could last 30 minutes straight, while others raced up to three classes! Alisa Nix went for the triple and competed in three classes. She raced both divisions of the 80cc Beginner class as well as the Amateur Quad class. The Ukiah speedster actually won two of her three classes. Nix rode away with a win in the BOcc Beginner second-divi· sion contest and also scored a second-place finish in the BOcc Beginner first division. She also finished first in her Amateur Quad race. With all the riders focused on the start for the BOcc Beginner first-division contest. J.J. Alcantar got the jump on the pack. Nix was around seventh at the start, so she had her work cut out for her. As the laps went by, Alcantar was still out front, with Suzuki rider Michael Parks running second. By the seventh lap, Nix had worked her way past Parks and into second. Alcantar remained cool until the finish and put his Yamaha on the top podium spot. Nix kept charging until the end and finished a solid second aboard her YZ. Parks didn't let any other riders by and ended his race in third. With only five minutes to gather her thoughts, Nix was lined up again to battle in the BOcc Beg Division Two class. This time around, the race belonged to Nix; she got out front early and never looked back. She put in a great ride and won convincingly. Runner-up honors went to Honda·mounted Brandon Rito of Yorkville. Third was earned by Yamaha rider Blake Kehoe of Walnut Creek. In other 80cc racing, Daniel Atencio and Brad Dingman had a great race in the BOcc Novice class. The two Yamaha riders rode at close to the same speed on this day, with Dingman just edging out Atencio for the win. Third went to Justin Morgan, who was also riding blue. Dingman then went on to claim another win in the 80cc Open class, while Atencio fin· ished a respectable second in the 80cc Super· mini class. In the 80cc Intermediate class, Kyle Smith had a race he could brag about. Smith was battling Cameron Ewing up until about halfway before he dropped his Yamaha. Ewing kept his Suzuki on two wheels and charged on. It looked like a win for Ewing, but Smith wasn't about to throw in the towel just yet. Smith recovered. put his head down and raced on, slowly catching up to Ewing. On the second-to-Iast lap, Smith was able to make his move, and the pass stuck. Smith came home the winner, while Ewing finished a close second. Wikel Waits For No One BY CONNIE JOHNSON STILLWATER, OK, NOV. 30 Cooperland Raceway in Stillwater, Oklahoma, held round six of the Cooperland Championship Motocross Series the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Mother Nature cooperated somewhat. granting sunny skies but temperatures that were quite nippy. Despite the cold air, riders showed up to earn points and inch their way a little closer to winning the mountain bike that's the first-place prize or the BMX bike that's the second·place prize in each class. Chad Wikel got the most points he could get in the 125cc Beginner class by winning the overall on his Yamaha. Chris Evans beat Wikel off the gate in moto one and held everyone off until the last lap, when Michael Gwin guided his KTM past Evans' Honda. Wikel followed in third, with Brad Wikel, also on a Yamaha, coming in fourth. Tim Caudle rode his YZ to a fifth-place finish. Brad Wikel got the holeshot in moto two but was soon passed by Chad and had to settle for a second· place finish. with Evans. Gwin and Chad Johnson, also riding a Yamaha, stringing along behind. In the 80cc Junior class, the holeshot honors went to Yamaha-mounted Tyler Burns in moto one, but Burns couldn't hold off hardcharging Yamaha rider Justin Berry. who took the lead and never looked back. Burns kept him honest but couldn't get back around him. Suzuki jockey Alex Voit followed in third. In moto two, Burns once again got the jump off the gate, with Berry making short work of him in the rhythm section on lap one. The finishing order was a duplicate of moto one. Clay Chaplewski put his Polini on top of the podium in the 50cc Open class by getting out in front early and pulling a big lead in both motos. Brett Burg's KTM was the fastest bike off the gate. getting him the holeshot in both motos. Burg stayed on the gas to finish second both times. The remainder of the field was pretty spread out. with Pierce Low, Austin Bruckshaw and Austin Cross, all on KTMs, rounding out the top five in both motos. There's one more round to be run before Old Man Winter comes to call. Who will get to take home a new mountain bike? Stay tuned .... 50 (4·6): I. Trey Mert1n (Cob); 2. Pien::e Low (KTM): 3. The trail was 10.4 miles long and had an even mix of tight, technical woods; open, sandy sections; wide grass-tracks; fun jumps; a motocross section; and a few absolutely gnarly tough spots. just to keep things fair. There was a large turnout, with racers coming from Texas. Louisiana, Missouri, Kansas, Tennessee and Oklahoma. The South Eastern Regional Championship was at stake, and many riders wanted that victory. The race started with the Pro riders on the line. The Stone Works/Dunlop/Honda Jockeybacked Doug Stone was very impressive; he qUickly got the holeshot, with Clay Boreing in second, foliowed by SCR/Yamaha's Steve Leivan. Weisenfels got off to a bad start but quickly regained ground by passing several riders and getting on the trail behind Leivan. Wei senfeis was able to make a pass, and by doing so, he positioned himself right behind Stone. Stone and Weisenfels were neck and neck on Results 50 (0-6): I. Cody Fendley (KTM): 2.
