Faulkner held down third over, of all people, Brown, who had charged all the way from the third row to fourth. eN Illinois State Fairgl1lunds Springfield, Illinois Resuhs:Navemberl&,2DD2 STORY AND PHOTOS BY DAVE HOENIG/FLAT TRAK FOTOS SPRINGAELD, IL, NOV. 16 lUiJ or the first time in almost 30 ~ years, motorcycle racing returned to the Illinois State Fairgrounds Coliseum for indoor dirt-track action. Kentucky-based Steve Nace Promotions brought its series north for the first time and was greeted with a large turnout. More than 370 entries signed in for the combined TT and short track, with both motorcycles and quads making up the 39 classes. The short track was a smooth little oval with slight banking, while the TT used almost all of the oval and all of the infield, making it U-shaped. Riders from all parts of the country made the trip, with Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan and Texas all represented. There were current stars, former stars and future stars competing. Current stars included AMA Grand National regulars Rich King, Bryan Bigelow and Jason Tyer. King, of course, is on the Harley-Davidson factory team, while Bigelow and Tyer are both former AMA Rookie of the Year award winners. Surprisingly, none of the above would prove to be big winners. Future star Aaron King tagged along with dad Rich and went back to Dysart, Iowa, with five wins. Back in the mid1980s, Brad Furlong was one of the big guns in the AMA's Junior Nationals before disappearing from the dirt· 46 JANUARY 8. 2003' .,. U .,. I e track scene. The 30-something Furlong is making a return, and he also came away with five feature wins, including victories over Rich King, Bigelow and Tyer in the Pro classes. Aaron King's wins came in the 200cc Amateur (Flat Track and TT), 505cc Amateur (Flat Track) and Open Amateur (Flat Track and TT). Likewise, Furlong swept all the mains he rode: Veteran over 30 (Flat Track and TT), 250/0pen Amateur (Flat Track) and Open Pro (Flat Track and TT). A former National number holder, Nick Daniels, won the Mad Dog (Flat Track and TT), Mad Dog Stock (Flat Track) and 0-200cc Pro-Am (TT) mains. Earl's Racing's Kentucky clan made a big impact in the large minibike fields. The Gillim brothers (Ethan, Hayden and Frankie Lee), along with teammate Jake Lewis, captured all but the 85cc Flat Track, where Illinois' Kevin Vance topped Kyle Snyder for the win. While the tight short track provided good racing all night, it was the Open Pro main that the spectators most anticipated. At the flash of the green, Tyer led the 10-rider main into turn one. Bigelow slipped inside of Tyer exiting turn two and was in the lead at the end of the first lap. Jeremy Deruyter then fell in turn four, bringing out the red flag and a complete restart. This time, Furlong got the holeshot, with Bigelow, Ben Carlson, n e _ s Tyer and Clayton Riggle gIvIng chase. Bigelow stayed glued to Furlong but could not wedge his way past. Riggle worked his way up to third, over Tyer. The only real scare of the night came as the 250cc/Open Amateur main hit turn one. John Faulkner III led Furlong, Chris Schmulbach and Bigelow, but several riders were tangling on the outside. Joel Brown ended up in the wall and was motionless on the track for several minutes while the EMTs looked after him. Brown slowly made it back to his feet and onto the penalty line for the restart. Furlong nailed the start this time, with Faulkner and Bigelow hot after Short Tl1lIck 50 SHAFT: 1. Ethan Gillim; 2. Kyle Vaughn: 3. Stephen Lannom; 4. Keeton Fleener; 5.
