Northwest Arenacross Nationals Round 4: Forster Livestock Pavilion STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT SALEM, OR, NOV. 17 fM} ationally ranked Northwest riders ~ Ty "Tiger" Lacey and Josh Hill jolted the competition at round four of the Northwest Arenacross Nationals, held at the Oregon State Fairgrounds' Forster Livestock Pavilion. Lacey, riding his newly acquired 2003 Yamaha YZ250F, decimated the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, while Washington's Hill hammered the competition in the aocc (12-13) and Supermini classes. Riders from throughout the Northwest were on hand for the Webb Hill Raceways/Lee Collins-promoted event, including Suzuki-mounted Idahoans Matt and Sam DeAtley. Both of the riders from Lewiston attempted to put the clamps on the highly heralded Hill in the aocc ranks, but it was all HiJI on this particular day. Both DeAtleys darted ahead of Hill at the start of the first Supermini moto, but Hill separated the duo coming out of turn one and then, a lap later, got around the elder of the two DeAtleys, Sam, to maintain a lead he would not relinquish. Sam stayed in close quarters with Hill for much of the race until lapped riders aided in Hill's sevensecond advantage at the finish. Matt finished third, followed by Oregon's Jared Wood, Nick Bergley, Nick Van Sickel and Zack Tutewiler. Moto two was Matt's at the start, although the Yamaha Motor Corporation/Pro Circuit/Troy Lee/ Smithbacked Hill found a way past the ll-year-old and forged on to a 1-1 win. Sam got around his brother to again trail Hill, which was good for second overall. Matt (3-3), Wood (4-4) and Bergley (5-5) followed. The 13-year-old Hill was also successful in the combined aocc Age Group contest, posting a pair of moto wins to top the aocc (12-13) portion. Sam (2-2) finished second overall, 34 DECEMBER " , 2002' cue I followed by Tutewiler (3-3). In the adjoined aocc (7-11) class, Matt led the way via 1-1 placings, followed by Wood (2-2) and Glenn Prestholt (3-3). Bergley aced both aocc (14-16) motos to top fellow Washingtonian Kris Collins. Lacey, who is readying an all-out assault on the AMA 125cc West Supercross Series this upcoming season, looks as if he's back to full speed after a leg injury late in the summer, as was evidenced by his four-for-four rampage of the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes. In the first combined 125cc Pro/Intermediate moto, Washington's Ricky Yorks grabbed the lead, followed by Lacey and Tracy Johnson. Both backed YZ. Johnson again trailed Lacey at the finish, which was good for second place in the Pro class, while Eric Cleveland netted third. Yorks landed both Intermediate-class moto wins, ahead of Jayson Couser. Former National number holder Tony Graves was one of the few riders to lead Lacey on the day, but the former fulltime AMA Supercross and National veteran was no match for the 19-year-old Lacey on this day. Lacey executed a perfect block-pass on Graves and his 2003 Yamaha YZ450F early in moto one of the 250cc Pro class to take the lead, going on to win by about 16 seconds. Ryan Leach progressed through the fjeld after a poor start to finish second (taking advantage of a crash on Graves' part), followed by Robert Holtgren, Ben Morgan, and Graves, who got rolling again to garner fifth. Leach darted to the head of the field at the start of moto two, but Lacey overcame a poor start and took the lead on lap four. Johnson also moved up through the field to trail Lacey at moto's end, although Johnson's first-moto sixth-place finish dropped him to fourth overall, Chris Alldredge was the dominant performer In the Pee Wee (7-81 and 50cc Open clasees at the Forster Livestock Pavilion. Johnson and Lacey dropped the former minicycle speedster back. in a battle for the point position, which went Lacey's way by a large margin at moto's end. Lacey jumped out front at the start of moto two and was never challenged, putting as much as a 12-second gap on the rest of the field in another runaway performance aboard his Motosports Outlet/ Answer/ Team Safety/Silkolene/Tucker Rocky- e n e _ os behind Lacey (1-1), Leach (2·3) and Holtgren (3-4). The younger of the two Lacey brothers, Race, also notched a pair of overall wins, posting the 125cc and Before The Hill Junior-class wins in dominating style. Husqvarna rider Nick Randklev placed second to Lacey in the 125cc class, while Brad Batchelor tallied a runner-up finish in the Before The Hill class. In the half-time Husky Challenge, Brandon Barber, the 2001-02 series Tony Graves rode his newly acquIred Yamaha VZ450F to wins In the Open Pro and Over 30 Pro classes in Salem, Oregon. champion, used his familiarity with t~e Swedish marque to easily win the Bill's Motorcycles Plus-sponsored event. Cory Paterson overcame a poor start to trail Barber at the finish, while Tysen Fischlin, Jonathan Sherriffs and Casey Sutton filled the top five.
