Stanton on the Gas
on the Grass
By LARRY WITMER
BUCHANAN, MI. OCT. 19-20
Jeff Stanton beat up on 44 other riders
mounted on heaVily modified XR75cc and
80cc Hondas on Red Bud's Auto Track. Stan·
ton rode flawlessly in his qualifier but had to
recover in the 12-lap final race to overtake Hi
Tech Horsepower's Derek Rose.
The final race of the year at Red Bud is traditionally known as the "Grass Track" evenl,
and it's all about fun. However, some of the
XR racers are very serious about the coveted
XR Track Champion title. The track on which
the big bikes run is put together on the back
side of the facility; it's old-school motocross,
with off-cambers. ruts and tree roots, and it
starts out on grass.

Fresh off his win at the U.S. Open. Mike
laRocco, riding a 125cc Amzoil Honda, took
to the MX track, along with Stanton. These
two raced ellch other in various matos, putting
on a show for the fans.
Service Honda/Subway Racing's Ted
Campbell from Arizona kept the fast guys
in sight.
"We don't have this type of terrain back
home," said Campbell. "That is a blast out
there'"
In the XR qualifier, Jay Wagner pulled the
holeshot over Larry Witmer, on the Answer/
FMF Honda, with LaRocco close in third.
LaRocco wasted no time passing Witmer
through the fast start-stretch triple at the start
of lap two. It didn't take long for the Factory
Connection's LaRocco to displace a pesky
Wagner for the lead. LaRocco took the
