AMA Eastern Regional Four-Stroke National Series ... Fall Classic MX Series I!!!!JI Final Rounds: High Point Raceway ."Z'~ (Above) At High Point Raceway in Mount Morris, Pennsylvania, Carpenter happily accepts his second Four-Stroke National Championship of the year. (Left) Paul Carpenter (42) leads the Four-Stroke Pro class off the line at the final round of both the AMA Eastem Regional Four-Stroke National Series and the Fall Classic MX Series. STORV AND PHOTOS BV RAVMOND GUNDV MOUNT MORRIS, PA, OCT. 27 he eighth and final round of the AMA Eastern Four-Stroke Nationals and the Fall Classic Motocross Series came to High Point. After the rain, it looked like it was going to be a mudfest, but the Coombs crew worked hard to get the track right for the final round. CRF450R rider Paul Carpenter came into the final round with the points lead after four overall wins in the Four-Stroke class, over Jason McCormick. Defending champ Kelly Smith (having won the last three years) sat third overall in points. Carpenter had 44 points on McCormick and 59 over Smith; all he had to do was stay in the top 10 to take his second Four-Stroke National Championship for this year after winning the Western Championship a few months ago. In the 250cc class, it looked like Carpenter had to stay in front of Smith and McCormick to take the series overall. In the ] 25cc series, defending champ Smith held the points lead. Tyson Hadsell, Christopher Whitcraft and Kevin Walker were all MIA this weekend, so Smith only had to worry about Joshua Summey. It looked like Smith could walk away with a championship this year. In the Four-Stroke class, Carpenter went] -] for the day after taking both holeshots, thus securing his second championship of the year and becoming the new Eastern FourStroke National champ. "In the Four-Stroke motos, I pulled both holeshots and took the overall. .. " said Carpenter. "I had a smooth race in both motos. I knew McCormick was behind me, and he T 28 NOVEMBER 20, 2002' cue I was riding strong and fast all day. I was happy to clinch the championship today. It was nice to do it here at High Point. This year, I got both West and East Four-Stroke Championships." After a hard day, McCormick finished 3-2 for second ;'verall for the day and in the points. "In the first Four-Stroke moto, I went over the handlebars when I was battling with Pauly," said McCormick. "I was able to hold on to third in that moto. In the second moto, I came out and stayed in second the whole moto, behind Pauly." Third overall for the day and the series was Smith (2-3). After contesting six motos, he was one tired rider. "In the Four-Stroke first moto, I did pretty good, taking a second in that one," said Smith. "Then, in the second one, I was pretty tired after racing three classes, so I stayed third most of the moto." Spud Walters went 4-4 for fourth overall, Jon Boruff went 5-5 for fifth overall, and Brian Mason went 6-6 for sixth overall. Jeremy Cook (8-7), Hans Neel (7-10), Jack Carpenter (10-9) and Sammy Holland (13-8) rounded out the top] O. The 250cc class was almost a repeat of the Four-Stroke contest, as Carpenter again went I-I for the overall for the day and the series. McCormick took the moto-one holeshot, but a flat front tire stopped him. After a bad start, Carpenter picked off riders on his way to the front. On the final laps, Gene Stull and Carpenter battled for the lead, until Carpenter pulled away for the moto win. Carpenter then led the second moto from start to finish for the n e _ s e 250cc overall, with Walters second, over Summey and Smith. Walters had problems in the first moto, finishing fifth, but came back in the second moto to place second for second overall. Summey took the overall win in the 125cc class with a 2-1 tally. "In the first ] 25cc moto, I had the lead a few times, then kind of got messed up and dropped back to [finish] second," Summey recounted. "In the second moto, I got off to a good start and got around Chad Ward pretty early and started to get a lead on him. I won the overall." Smith (1-3) was second overall for the day after fighting hard in both motos. "First moto went good," Smith reported. "The second one was bad. The bike stalled at the start. I had to work my way up front again. I was able to get up to third, with the hope to take first. I wasn't too far from the lead." Ward (6-2) was third overall. "In the first 125cc moto, I got a bad start because of my clutch and ended up crashing and finishing sixth in that moto," said Ward. "Second moto, I was able to get a better start and run up front with everyone. It turned out pretty good in the end. I got a third overall in the ] 25cc Pro class. " Finishing out the top five were Barry Carsten (4-4) and William Ursic (5-6). eN High Paint Raceway Maunl Marris, Pennsylvania Results: October 27, 2002 [Final rounds) OPEN MINI (10-15): I.
