each of the two semifinals. In the first, Kinigadner fended off a conservative Van Den Bosch and the Huskies of Boris Cham bon and William Rubio. Kunzel won the second, just ahead of Max Manzo and Gerald Delepine. Seventh in this heat was former 250cc MX World Champion Frederic Bolley, the position good enough to get him a spot in the main event. Belgian Eddy Seel had bad time in the first semifinal and retired with a flat rear tire; he qualified for the final by getting a third in the last-chance qualifier. The first corner of the main heat saw Italian rocket Manzo running up front, but Van Den Bosch was right there, and it was just matter of a few corners before the Frenchman got the lead. At that point, the race was almost over. Van Den Bosch ran away and secured enough ground to get another comfortable win - and the title, of course. Manzo used a new tire and decided not to force his pace in order to finally finish on the podium for the first time. The Italian, who was the only rider capable of beating Van Den Bosch this year (in the European Championship), got attacked a couple of times by Kinigadner, but Kinigadner went down, and the fight for second place ended right there. German National Champion Kunzel almost eliminated himself in the first stages of the final by missing a gear at the end of the longest straight; he went down trying to avoid Kinigadner, who was ahead of him. Third place went to France's Willy Rubio, and fourth to a conservative Delepine on his works Vertemati to defend his second-place status in the overall standings. Another outstanding race was run by Ivan Lazzarini on the smallest bike (a private Rigo Moto-Yamaha) in the championship. Bolley, who had not had an excellent start but put up an aggressive fight, finished ninth after slicing through the pack to come up from 17th place on the opening lap. No wonder his fastest lap time was second only to that of Van Den Bosch.
