I could have been a golfer. I played as much golf as I did ride my bike when I was in the juniors. I loved it and wasn't bad, either, but at the end of the day, I just loved riding my bike too much. I With so many World titles to your name, does winning the British title again mean anything to you? No, it doesn't mean anything anymore. I won the British championship again this year, and I think that I'll probably ride in Spain next year. I don't enjoy the British championship; I don't know why I do it. I've got an option to ride in Spain, so I'm just considering that now. www.motorcycleshows.com • 800-331-5706 NE E What is your favorite trials memo ory from your childhood? From my first trial, which I won. I was 9; I rode a Whitehawk and won quite easily. What advice would you give any youngsters wanting to reach the top in trials? It's not easy, but when I look back at what I did, I just enjoyed riding my bike. What would be your typical day at home? During the winter, I go to the gym in the moming and then go riding in the afternoon. Come 5 or 6 o'clock, that's it; I try not to do anything more to do with bikes, so as to keep it like a proper job. During the season, each day is different. What do you think of the idea of an Indoor Trial des /'lations? (Long pause) I've got mixed feelings on it, really. I'm not that bothered about it. It looks like a way that an indoor trial can be run without paying the riders the proper amount of money. Indoor events are very dangerous, so if I do it, I'll be receiving proper money. Maybe in the future it could be a bigger thing, but it needs help to get it going. I think it's a stepping-stone for trials to enter the Olympics. Within the next couple of Olympics, we'll be in as a demonstration sport, and I hope we are. Which performance do you see as being your best ever? There have been a few, really. In '93, when I was riding in the European Championship, things were very close at the last round; whoever won the race would get the championship. All the riders were scoring about 18 to 20 on the first lap, and I lost one mark on the second. Riding as well as I rode, having to deal with the pressure for the first time, that's when I realized that I could really do something in trials. After that, winning my first World title in Czecho with all my family there. eN -----------------------------------------------~~~~~ o YES!
