the talented riders were still able to run these miles and only lose one minute on the 24-mph speed average. It was along the railroad tracks on the way to the restart at mile 35.6 that Lafferty, the series points leader, had his problems. It was unknown at the time what exactly happened to his KTM, but whatever happened ended the champion's run for the day. The following 12 miles would make up the heart of the event and eventually determine the outcome on the second time through. One of the signs posted by the club referred to the route as the "Tunnel of Love." These trails through the small trees were extremely tight, often making riders Flip from handlebar stop to handlebar stop. The club used two checkouts during this test, with the second being the first tie breaker of the event. Hoess took the lead for the first time there, as he beat Hawkins in the tie breakers by just 15 seconds. Barry Hawk and the rest of the fast guys were then down by at least one point. After connecting back to the starting area via train tracks and asphalt roads, the riders had ample time to gas and regroup. Riders rode back into the loop for the start of the second lap without a start control. Savvy riders were aware that check locations could be different the second time through, and there could be a check at any point, but many of the newbies burned the check the club put at the 2.8-mile mark. The next two tests were similar to the morning run, except for the somewhat drier conditions. The "Tunnel of Love" test was again the big point-taker, with an extra check-out thrown in for good measure. It was at the first of these three check-outs that Hawkins won the event by beating the flip of the card and besting Hoess by dropping only four points at check 12. All of the other fast guys dropped five points there, and 12s and 13s at the last two checks. Kevin Bennett won the A overall, dropping only 71 points. Mike Grizzle won the Open A class with 77, also locking down the year-end points chase for the Open A championship. Jim Bates from Nashville topped the B class to take home high-point honors. eN SI JOIN THE HUNDREDS OF SUCCESSFUL, ACTIVE DEALERS WHO SELL CYCLE NEWS IN THEIR STORES • Build WEEKLY FOOT TRAFFIC in your store. • Create ENTHUSIASM for new products, latest events and trends in the sport of motorcycling. • local COVERAGE of events in your area, in addition to National & Worldwide news about motorcycles - as it happens!
