National competitor Matt Walker was signed up in and was expected to win the 125cc A class, until a practice-lap crash left him with a dislocated shoulder. Meanwhile, Kawasaki jockey McGourty .nd Suzuki jockey Fisher were trading second b.ck and forth. Fisher eventually edged McGourty at the flag. Shealy had problems .nd finished sixth. The first three laps of malo two had three different leaders: Shealy had the initial lead. Then Fisher took a brief turn at the front. McGourty then charged past both riders on lap three and held on for the moto win, over Shealy. Smith, meanwhile, recovered from a poor start and took fourth in an exciting photo finish, behind Fisher. Kawasaki/Fox/Dave Kelly Racing-backed McGourty's 3-1 tally netted the overall honors, .he.d of Fisher's 2-3 score and Smith's 1·4 day. Series points le.der Shealy had 10 settle for 6-2 finishes and fourth over.lI. "I had a worn-out foam tube in the back," Wahlen said, "and I was really having trouble with it sliding around. It took me a while, but I got used to the way it handled." Wahlen soon started to pick up the p.ce. At the one-hour mark, Wahlen got by Bryant and wound up winning by three minutes. With two wins under his belt and several top- three finishes, Wahlen may soon be the youngest champion in Forward Motion history. A I.rge group of A riders had some good racing, and it was Gary Dick, on a brand-new KTM 525, taking his first-ever A·c1ass win. On the start, Honda-mounted Brad Jones rounded tum one in first, but Paul Dipasquale motored Z1round the outside on his Gas Gas 300 to t.ke the lead. Jones hounded Dipasqu.le .nd retook the lead half a lap later. Next, Dick moved by Dipasquale, .nd then he soon motored by Jones in a big sweeper tum on lap two. Troy Taff and Bob Searing, both on YZ250 four·strokes, came blazing through the pack after b.d starts. Taff got into second and attempted to catch Dick, but Taff stalled his bike, and it took time to restart. Taff, who is soon switching to a 2003 Honda CR250, settied for second. Searing and Dipasquale made their way past Jones late in the two-hour event to finish third and fourth. 3.
