Muskrat Run
Dutch Sp rt Part! MX

Muskrat Love
By UlRRY WITI'IER
BLOOMINGDALE, MI, OCT, 5-6
The fifth annuli I Muskrat Run was a hit with
the riders. The track featured an old-school
motocross winding through the back section
of the track, utilizing the off-cambers, naturalterrain dropaways, and some deep ruts that
formed due to there being more than 400 rac-
ers competing at Dutch on the weekend.
Service Honda of Hammond Inc. sponsored the two days of racing. Doug Goins from
Service Honda brought plenty of product that
was given away to the top three in each class
for both days of racing. Bryan McNulty, a
125cc B rider, won a set of Bridgestone knobbies. Dave Bilzowski of Elkhart, competing in
the Evolution division, won the huge Thor
race-gear bag. Service Honda's support of this
year-end event is greatly appreciated.
Also featured was the Saturday Night XR
Track Championship, sponsored by Aspen
Travel of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
There were five race divisions on the Smurf
City Auto Track, which had been taken over
by the adults on their modified XRs. The
fastest XR rider of the event was Derek Rose,
on his heavily modified 2001 XR80 mini. Rose
outpowered his competition, easily winning
the modem-day XR division.
"My Hi Tech Horsepower XR was fast
tonight!" Rose said. "I can't wait to challenge
Jeff Stanton in two weeks at Red Bud's
XR event!"
The best race of the night was the combined Pee Wee and Z50 event. Kim Finley and
Misty Couch went at it with J.R. Reed throughout the eight-lap final. Each would lead and
crash, handing over the lead to the other rider.
Then Reed cut the track to catch the frontrunning duo, and the crowd responded with
cheery "boos." It was quite a sight. On the last
lap, Reed stuffed his ZSO into Finley's PW on
the final comer. They both went down, and
Couch was trying to get around the downed
duo. The crowd was yelling for their favorite
rider to rise quickest. Finley got her PW going
and went to the checkers, and she was all
smiles with her boys in winner's circle.
"That was fun, but I'm going to be sore
tomorrow," she allowed. "My boys will be
pushing me around in the stroller. My
husband, Doug, will probably be sore, also he was laughing during this eventI"
At the conclusion of the XR Track Championship, the grand"'prize drawing took place for
the round-trip package for two to Daytona
Speed Week in March 2003, courtesy of
Aspen Travel. The lucky winners were Paul
and Kelli Ransier of Portage, Michigan. The
couple was parked way out in back of the
Dutch Sport Park facility when they heard
their names called out as the contest winners.
"I ran all the way up here," said an excited,
out-of-breath Ransier. "We are going to Speed
Week! Dutch does so much for the racers
herel I would like to thank Aspen Travel for
donating these tickets."
The Muskrat Run was held on Sunday. The
65cc (7-11) division was the largest class
of the day. Coming out on top was Ken Bass,
going 1-2 for his first overall win in the
65cc division.
"I didn't get the best of starts today," Bass
said after the event. "I had to pass some good
riders. I was really fast in the sand switchback
area, going wide and passing guys who would
take the tight, inside, rutted part of the comer.
I'm going to remember this weekend all win·
ter. This is my first win in the 65cc division. I
would like to thank Milk Money Accessories
and Nevin's, and also my mom and dad for
their support:
Taylor Morris put in consistent matos,
going 3-4 for second overall.
Zac Hayes also enjoyed a trip to the podium with a 5-3 tally. In the first moto, Hayes
ripped the holeshot and ran up front with his
race buddies.
"I had fun today!" Hayes enthused. "The
first moto, I got the holeshot and held the
pack off. I really liked the Muskrat Run section. It got rough and technical. I would like to
thank Hi Tech Horsepower for the support.
Also my sister's boyfriend, Derek Ros~, for
helping me with my riding. And my mom and
dad for their help:
