FMF AMA Fall Classic Eastern Four-Stroke Nationals Round 5: Lincoln Trail Motosports out of the bowl turn, and flew past Smith. Though he tried, Smith couldn't get back around by the checkers. McCormick took the moto win, with Carpenter second and Pulley third. "I will take the win," said the overall winner, Carpenter, on the podium, "but 1 was not the fastest rider here today." "I grew up in the mud, but the track was a lot better the second moto," said McCormick, the overall runner-up. "I'm new to the fourstroke, but I like it real well." "I'm glad to be racing and having fun," said Walters, who was third overall. "I did not like the mud from the first moto, but 1 did like the track." eN STORY AND PHOTOS BY JAMES PINCKARD CASEY, IL, OCT. 6 ~ oiling thunder, falling rain." ll\l Those words from the famous AC/DC song "Hell's Bells" seemed to fit this day's event. In practice, the sun was out and the track was in perfect shape. As the bikes lined up for the first moto of the day, a light but steady rain began, and the track soon became hard to ride and sent riders and their teams scurrying to find the perfect setup. About eight motos into the day's events, the rain suddenly stopped and the sun came back out. The track crew went to work and made a fast, rough track for the rest of the day. The fans got their money's worth, as they got to see some of the best riders in the world ride both in the mud and dry. And ride fast they did! The thunder came from the Eastern Four-Stroke National event. It was raining steadily as these riders gated for their first moto. At the drop of the gate, spectators could feel the ground shake and hear the roar as the riders flew toward the first turn. At the end of the first lap, White Brothers Honda rider Paul Carpenter was out front and gone! Behind him, the biggest surprise was Yamaha rider Tyson Hadsell, who had a pack of riders knocking at his back door. KTM of SoCal rider Keith Johnson, Honda rider Spud Walters, and Yamaha pilot K~lly Smith were all on the gas in the mud. Smith looked like he was on a stock YZ450F compared to the very trick Hondas of Walters and Carpenter. Behind them, Thor/Maxima/R&D Motosports/ ASV /EVS Yamaha rider Dustin Pulley was also on the pace, but the man on the move was Planet Honda rider Jason McCormick. At the end of the first lap, McCormick was in 19th. By the third lap, Walters had passed Johnson for into second. McCormick, on the other hand, had worked his was up to seventh! By lap six, McCormick had worked his way up to the lead pack, and he didn't plan to stop there. His next victim was Pulley, and then he set his sights on Smith. One lap later, McCormick was there! He made his pass into fourth, but he didn't have time to catch the top three. At the checkers, it was Carpenter, Walters, Johnson, McCormick, Smith and Pulley. Hadsell had trouble late in the moto and ended up 10th. As they made the parade lap for the second moto, one thing was certain: The track conditions were about 1000 percent better than in the first moto. When the gate dropped, the pack thundered into the first turn, but this time McCormick was out front, and he set a pace matched by none on this day. Carpenter was also on the gas in second, with lincoln TI1III Matasports Casey, Illinois Results: October S, 2002 (Round 51 Jason McC;:onnick (761 leads Paul Carpenter (421 and the rest of the pack at start of the second moto of round five of the FMF AMA Fall Classic Eastern Four-Stroke Nationals. 50 SHAFT: 1. At the end of the first lap, Smith found himself in 11 tho By the second lap, Smith had worked his way up to eighth and was coming up on Walters. Knowing Smith was back there, Walters got around Mason. That was not the end of Mason's troubles, because Smith made the pass on him and set out after Walters. Walters and Smith put on a great battle. Their war carried them past Johnson. Smith put pressure on Waiters and made the pass going into one of the hardest corners on the track and could not get stopped and went down, letting Walters, Johnson and Mason by. Once Smith got back under way, it looked like he was again going to work his way back to the front. However, Mason didn't understand that. Smith passed Mason, but on the last lap Mason came back, got the drive he needed (Left) Paul Carpenter (center:! was the overall Four-Stroke Pro winner In Casey, Illinois.
