STORY AND PHOTOS BY JIM P. SANDERSON BINGHAMTON, NY, SEPT. 28-29 ust over 400 riders came out to the beautiful Broome-Tioga Sports Center to race the full National track for the 20th annual Kawasaki/Michelin New York State Motocross Championships. Two things changed for this year's event: The promoter, Hurd Motorsports, made the event a two-day, threemoto format, and there was a new title sponsor, Michelin Tires. Mother Nature hasn't been very cooperative this fall when it comes to motocross. She dumped almost two inches of rain on the area the night before the event. Track conditions for the first day of the event were not pretty. Track conditions for the second day of the event, however, were nothing short of perfect. Factory Suzuki pilot Bob Kiniry smoked the competition in the superfast Collegeboy class. Kiniry had a perfect day, riding to a 1-1-1 score for the class overall. Kiniry also topped the extremely competitive 125cc Pro/Expert class with a 1-1-2 score. Kiniry battled with Factory Connections' Ryan Mills, who rode to a 2-2-1 score for runner-up honors. Mills also topped the 250cc Open Pro/Expert podium with a perfect 1-1-1 tally. Kiniry easily won all three Collegeboy motos. He finished the first moto with an II-second lead, the second with a nine-second advantage, and the third with the biggest advantage, 13 seconds. Brian Gray earned second overall with 4-2-2 rides, while Chad Charbonneau rounded out the podium with his consistent 3-3-3 score. Charbonneau led the start of the first Collegeboy moto, with Mike Leavitt, Charlie Ellis and Kiniry trailing. Kiniry had the point position by the end of the first lap. Leavitt was up 36 NOVEMBER 6, 2002' cue to second, Charbonneau dropped to third, Gray moved up to fourth and Ellis dropped to fifth. Kiniry won. Rounding out the top five were Leavitt, Charbonneau, Gray and Ellis. Kiniry got a better start in the second moto, rounding the first turn in the point position. In tow were Charbonneau, Dave Nyzio and James Ayres. When the leaders came off the National Hill, the top five were Kiniry, Charbonneau, Nyzio, Ellis and Karl Morin. Kiniry once again pulled away and won. Trailing him were Gray, Charbonneau, Leavitt and Morin. Kiniry got another great start in the final moto and led the pack out of the first turn, with Leavitt, Charbonneau, Gray and Nyzio trailing. Kiniry had a nine-second lead by lap three. Kiniry increased that lead to 13 seconds by the checkered flag. Rounding out the top five were Gray, Charbonneau, Leavitt and Justin Murray. KTM pilot Sunny Drake topped the 65cc (7-11) podium with a 1-1-3 score. Second overall went to Colton Harrison with his 3-2-4 tally, and Frank Lettieri rounded out the podium with a 7-4-2 score. Drake led the start of the first 65cc (7 -11) moto, with Harrison, Marcus Hodge, Lettieri and Andrew Bristol in tow. Drake led until he went down a few turns before the start of lap three, which allowed Harrison to take the lead. However, that lead was short- lived, as Harrison went down in the following turn, allowing Drake to regain the point position. Drake motored on to an easy win with a comfortable lead. Rounding out the top five were Hodge, Harrison, Tyler Matteson and Sal Calamita. Drake led the start of the second moto but dropped back until the last lap, when he managed to retake the lead and get the moto win. Rounding out the top five were Harrison, Kyle Lentini, Lettieri and Matt Babbitt. Lettieri led the final moto off the start, with Drake, Harrison, Kyle Gillespie and Lentini trailing. Lentini moved all the way into the lead after only half a lap and held on for the moto win, ahead of Lettieri, Drake, Harrison and Hodge. Team Green's Mitch Dougherty trounced the competition in the Schoolboy class, motoring to a perfect 1-1-1 score and winning each moto by at least a 14-second advantage. Dougherty also had a perfect 1-1- 1 score in the superfast 125cc Amateur class. Rounding out the Schoolboy podium were Brian Murphy, who rode to a 4-2-4 score, and Brian Cook, with a 2-4-6 tally. Dougherty led at the start of all three motos and quickly pulled away from the pack, making each moto a race for second through fifth for everyone else in the class. Dougherty finished the first moto with a 14-second lead, the second with a 15-second advantage, and the final moto with another 14-second lead. Rounding out the top five in the first Schoolboy moto were Cook, Davey Sterritt, Murphy and Thomas Sunny Drake p.ottorn left) leads the pack ou1 of the rhythm section In the 65cc (7-11) class, with Colton Harrison (i), Marcus Hodge (66), Kyle Lentini (604) and Kyle Gillespie 175) In tow.
