"I'm just happy to take the title
again," Andrews said when it was all
over.
"I would've won the championship
if Fred would've gott.en fourth or
worse," Woodford said. "But it was
nice that I was still in the hunt, seeing
that I didn't do all the events this
year. I think I have a chance at the
title next year."
All told, Woodford won four rounds
this year and Andrews one.
When the Black Coal's traditional
shotgun fired to signal the start of the
race, Woodford got right to business,
as he blasted his KX250 into the early
ahead of Andrews and Honda
CRF450R-mounted Doug Blackwell.

came down to the final round, with
three riders having a chance to walk
away with the 2002 crown. Fred
Andrews, Chuck Woodford and Brian
Garrahan all came into the Black Coal
National in Indiana with the hopes of
coming away with the number-one
plate, but Andrews had the best hand,
as he held a slim lead over Woodford
and a fairly comfortable advantage
over Garrahan. As it turned out,
Andrews played his cards right and
was the one who came away taking
the pot and his second successive
National Hare Scrambles title.
Andrews, however, didn't win in
Indiana. That honor instead went to
Woodford, who did what he had to do
to win the championship in Indiana,
but there was nothing he could do
about what went on behind him.
Woodford was hoping that perhaps a
few riders - namely Doug Blackwell
and Garrahan - would help him out
by finishing between him and the
defending champ, but that would not
happen, as Andrews did what he had
