(Left) Ronnie Raymond topped the 250c:c: Novic:e c:lass. Iy, before problems caused both riders to slip out of the top 10. Darrell Sellers took advantage of the demise of Frese and Perry and moved into fourth place, where he stayed until the end. Finishing out the top five was Connor Ference of Oberlin, Ohio, on his McKune Cycle and Performance KTM, after placing eighth in his heat race. 65ee (7-11) Cameron Lansing of Prairie Grove, Illinois, found the throttle and hit the first turn in the lead, with Coby Meeks of Aztec, New Mexico, and Gared Steinke of Salem, Oregon, hot on his tail. After finishing third in his heat race, Matthew Menzer of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, was looking good in fourth, behind Steinke. Meeks was on the gas and looked determined to run down Lansing, and as they raced out front, they started to put a gap between themselves and Steinke, in third. Heading into a right-hand tum after the first set of whoops, Lansing went too high and allowed Meeks to cut undemeath him and slam the door on him. In doing so, Lansing lost his front wheel and ended up on the ground while Meeks took the lead, looking over at Lansing as he went in the opposite direction on the other side of the track. Menzer was able to capitalize on Lansing's soil sample and went on to take second, behind Meeks. Lansing quickly recovered to finish third, ahead of heat-one winner Terren O'Dell of Bentonville, Arkansas, and Steinke, who had slipped slightly to fifth. B5ee (12·15) Robert Loire of Salem, Wisconsin, took control in heat two with a win over Suzuki-mounted Mark Grady, while Team Green rider Jason Lawrence of Estell Manor, New Jersey, outraced Tony Kutzler of Pleas- fourth, behind Brooks. Wendricks rounded out the top five. Heat-two winner Chris Leadbeater of Gahanna, Ohio, was disappointed to be picking his bike up in tum one after a first-tum scuffle on the start. He collected a much lesser finish than he surely would have had he not fallen. (Len) Mlc:hael Graham did all he c:ould to stop the Hahn freight train In the 250c:c: Intennediate final, but he had to settle for sec:ond. (Above) George Weiland (77) used a good start to get a sec:ond-plac:e finish in the 25Oc:c: Beginner main. OVER 25 ant Prairie, Wisconsin, in heat one. Loire led from wire to wire in the main, grabbing the holeshot and riding mostly unchallenged to the win. Kutzler once again found himself on the rear fender of Lawrence, while Graddy pulled up behind in third after getting around William Duffy of Churchton, Maryland, who would eventually finish just inside the top 10. Lawrence advanced to fourth, and Frank Burns of Scottsville, New York, followed him in to complete the top five. 125ee BEGINNER Frank Lane of Vallejo, California, proved that where you finish in your heat is not necessarily indicative of where you're destined to finish in the main. Lane took fifth in his heat, and then came back in the main to take the win, while Brad Manke of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, and heat-one winner Adam Derry of Jefferson, Iowa, hoped that Lane would make a mistake so that they could capitalize on his misfortune. Alex Pappas of Greenbriar, Tennessee, ultimately followed those two home in fourth, beating heat-two winner Rob Walewicz of Malverne, New York. 250ee NOVICE Despite winning his heat, Edward Wagner's hopes of a main-event win were shattered after the start of the main. A pile-up in turn one caught the eyes of the track officials; then Brad Munn and heat-two secondplace finisher Cory Smidel of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, got tangled up in a turn following a double jump, and that clinched the officials decision to restart the race, so Wagner's holeshot was all for nothing. while Smidel Ron Boyas of Cleveland, Ohio, took a third in his heat race, and then turned it into a win in the main. Steve Cross of Germantown, Ohio, beat Boyas in that heat race but could not duplicate the performance in the main, taking second to Boyas. Boyas proved to be a different rider in the main, beating both riders who had beaten him in his heat. Beau Judge of El Dorado, California, also won his heat race but slipped slightly to fourth in the main, with Alan Jonas of Rothschild, Wisconsin, in fifth. eN received medical attention, Munn picked himself up, and the rest of the pack returned to their gates. Wagner's second start didn't go as well, but he was looking good in second place despite being unable to clear the finish-line double on the first lap. This allowed Ronnie Raymond of Soquel, California, to gain a few bikelengths on him in the lead while clearing the obstacle, eventually securing his win. Ganon Van Dyke of Omaha, Nebraska, was running a close third on his Suzuki and kept the pressure on Wagner in second, but he couldn't find a line around Wagner and finished where he started. Joshua Stephens of Beckner, Missouri, and Ryan Johnson of Racine, Wisconsin, played cat-and-mouse with each other the entire moto but ended up finishing in the order they started - in fourth and fifth, respectively. Thomas Hahn of Belpre, Texas, put his bike out front in his heat race, then duplicated his efforts in the main with another holeshot and his third title of the day (he clinched the heat and main victories in the 125cc Intermediate and 125cc Schoolboy classes as well). Michael Graham of Brooks, Georgia, finished second to Hahn in their heat race, and then found himself chasing Hahn around the arena in the main event as well. Moving into third after a fifth-place start out of turn one was Justin Brooks of Clayton, California, after placing fourth in his heat race. David Sterritt of Athens, New York, tried to reel in Brooks after passing Michael Wendricks of Wadsworth, Illinois, but Sterritt couldn't gain a position and duplicated his heat-race finish with a cue I e n e _ S • OCTOBER 30. 2002 43
