Eddie a's O'Banion charged out of the gate in the first Schoolboy moto, with Perry Hoover, Reid Wilkinson and Patrick Massie following. O'Banion pulled out some distance as he led the class around the muddy, rutted course. O'Banion got a lucky break when Hoover went down on the second lap and had difficulty getting back under way. Hoover finally remounted, only to make another miscue; he was helped off the track. O'Banion filed by the checkered flag in first, uncontested. Chris Couch had worked his way into second but went down on the final lap, allowing Massie to take runner-up honors. Couch finished third, with Wilkinson fourth. The second moto occurred under somewhat better track conditions. Massie led the pack around the first turn, followed by O'Banion, Bryan Fiscus, Sean Lawhead, Couch and Wilkinson. O'Banion opened his throttle and took the lead by the second lap, and he remained there to the checkers to earn the Kentucky State Championship title. Massie finished second, with Couch taking another third, Wilkinson fourth and Lawhead fifth. South-Action Motorsports/EVS/Spy's Ryan Stanesu and Gateway Cycles/661/Pro Grips's Walker battled each other for the championship title in the 125cc B class. The first moto saw Stanesu out front, followed by O'Banion and WlIIlker. O'Banian went down, putting Walker up to second, while Couch and Chad Helton competed for third. By the sec· ond lap, Walker got by Stanesu for the lead. The pair battled until Walker crashed over the tunnel jump al the start of the third lap. Stanesu claimed the win, with O'Banian and Walker recovering for second and third and Couch taking fourth. Walker absconded with the holeshot in the second moto, with O'Banion close behind. Stanesu got a poor start and was at the rear of the pack. O'Banion powered his machine into the lead for the win, with Walker some distance back in second. Stanesu finished fourth. With the moto win, O'Banian claimed his second championship title for the day. David Farris snared the holeshot in the first Over 35 moto, pursued by Bill Hubbard and Wayne Moore. Brandon Baccus just kept riding his own race until he suddenly found himself in second after starting in 10th place. Colby Kreft moved up in the pack on his Yamaha to finish third, while Kawasaki jockey Devin Blackburn and Suzuki jockey Joshua Bridges rounded out the top five. With 41 Novice riders launching off the gate in the final moto, the spectators held their breath as the racers barreled into the first tum. Blackwell once again got the holeshot, with Fletcher and Smith right on his tail. Smith took over second after one lap, while Fletcher had his hands full holding off Montgomery and Little. By the end of the third lap, they were so close you couid have thrown a blanket over them. Montgomery and Little pulled in front of Fletcher as they went up the mountain for the last time. When the checkers came out. it was Blackwell, Smith, Montgomery, Little and Fletcher. In his first race as a Pro, Thomas Hahn absconded with the holeshot in the fIrSt 125cc Pro moto. Not only did he get the holeshot, he also pulled away and raced his Kawasaki to a first Pro moto win. J.J. Pecsok rode his Honda to a second-place finish, with Matthew Beavers behind him in third on a Suzuki. Ty Conner was a man on a mission. Coming from way back in the pack on his Honda, Conner fought his way past almost everyone to finish fourth, behind Beavers. Yamaha-mounted Norberto Debemardi followed him through the crowd and landed in fifth. Moto two was a completely different race. Tiffer Wright put his Yamaha in the holeshot position, only to crash out before getting in one lap. Pecsok graciously took over the lead but couldn't hold off a hard-charging Beavers. After much back-and-forth action with Honda rider David Tarnow, Suzuki jockey Austin Squires finally took control of third. Hahn, after getting a bad start and finishing lap one in eighth place, kicked in the afterburners and made some spectacular passes to finish fourth, with Debemardi not far behind. (KT"). 250... A: I.
