After four of seven world championship rounds, the Frenchman is the only rider to stand on the top rung of the podium. But in Austria, the factory KTM-backed van den Bosch didn't win easily. Vertemati's Gerald Delephine didn't take advantage of his surprising pole position, and van den Bosch was already first at the end of the starting straight. He held the lead for the first 20 of the 30 laps until the determined Italian specialist, Max Manzo, on his factory Husky overtook him after many attacks. But then Manzo lost the front tire and went out wide on a slow comer, allowing van den Bosch to pull back out to a comfortable lead and collect another victory. A renewed Boris Chambon (Husqvama) finished second, followed by consistent German Jorgen Kunzel (KTM). Manzo finished 10th. Delepine finished an impressive seventh after getting a terrible start and struggling for the first six laps. He is still second in the provisional standings, in front of Frenchman Willim Rubio (Husqvama). Registration for the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ride, which is open to the public, will begin at 9 a.m. at Quaker Steak & Lube, located at 8500 Lyra Drive, just off 1-71 north of downtown Columbus, Ohio. Participants will enjoy a free breakfast buffet and will receive a t-shirt commemorating the event. The registration fee for the ride is $10 per rider; all money raised will be donated to the Columbus affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The ride will leave Quaker Steak & Lube at 10:30 a.m. for the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum, located on the campus of the American Motorcyclist Association in Pickerington, Ohio. The AMA has praised three Illinois congressmen for asking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to extend the comment deadline on the agency's proposed emissions standards for road-going motorcycles. In a letter to the EPA, Republican Congressmen Timothy Johnson, Donald Manzullo and John Shimkus asked that the comment deadline of November 8 be extended to January 8, 2003. "The cost-effectiveness and safety issues regarding this proposed rule are the primary, though certainly not the sole, areas of concern raised by small business owners, motorcycle riders, and other stakeholders in our districts," the congressmen wrote. "The seriousness of these concerns warrants additional time to review and comment on the proposed regulations. Three months is simply insufficient time for affected parties to thoroughly examine - and EPA to properly address - the impact it will have on our constituents, " the letter said. Edward Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations, noted that the AMA has been involved in the rule-making process from the beginning. including testifying before EPA officials on September 17. Fiorentino, riding a KTM, had too much for Chambon and a long list of World Champions. Chambon was able to hold on to second place, followed by Eric Delannoy on a Husqvama, Six-time World Motocross Champion Stefan Everts could only manage sixth place, despite beginning the race on the front row of the grid. Four-time World 500cc Motocross Champion Joel Smets came back from a poor grid position to finish in 11th place, and other name riders, including two-time World 250cc Motocross Champion Frederic BoIley, Marnicq Bervoets and American wild-man and X-Games Freestyle Champion Mike Metzger finished in 17th, 18th and 38th, respectively. Earlier in the day, Chambon had won the Starbiker final, which pitted the quickest motocrossers and road racers against each 100 OCTOBER 23, 2002' cue • • n • Overall, the race in Austria (the same facility where the MXGP was held this year) wasn't bad at all, considering the heavy rain till Saturday night and the obvious elimination of the dirt part of the circuit. The next race is scheduled to take place in Italy over the October 19-20 weekend. Mario Marini of riders during this long rule-making process, which began nearly two years ago," Moreland said, iand we sincerely hope that the EPA will continue its course of considering the needs of riders by granting this comment deadline extension." The EPA is about to implement revised national emissions standards for new road motorcycles that would require those bikes to meet strict emissions standards beginning with 2006 models. The federal standards would be the same as those adopted by the state of California. but would go into effect two years after California's standards. The first tier of the new national standards would go into effect in 2006 and the second tier would be in place for 2010. The new national emissions standards are expected to result in an increased use of fuel injection and catalytic converters on new motorcycles. Some motorcycles sold in the United States already meet California's strict 2008 standards, which is the same as the planned federal EPA 2010 standard. The new California standard that begins with the 2004 model year, and the planned federal standard that would take effect for the 2006 model year, require new motorcycles to emit no more than 1.4 grams per kilometer traveled of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides and 12 grams per kilometer of carbon monoxide. The current federal emissions standards for street motorcycles are 5.0 grams of other. In that race, it was Sebastien Le Grelle taking second, followed by Everts, England's World Superbiker Chris Walker, and Bervoets. For Fiorentino, it was a day he won't forget in a hurry. Having gated brilliantly, he took the lead on lap one and was never headed despite a late-race challenge from Chambon. "It was all about getting a good position on the grid and then taking a good start," Fiorentino said. "I had a good setup from my semi-final race, I knew 1could do quick laps and even when Chambon got a little close, I felt comfortable." As for Everts, it was always going to be tough against the best Supermotard riders in the main event. "I enjoyed it," Everts said. "I will always be difficult against these guys - they know the correct tire setting and how the bike works. 1 only do this a few times a year, and it is not the sort of sport you can do a few times and run up front." Geoff Meyer .,.,s hydrocarbons and 12 grams of carbon monoxide per kilometer traveled. The EPA is accepting written comments on its proposed street motorcycle emissions rules until November 8.
