STC Stars Over Texas Night Series Round &: Three Palms Extreme-Sports Park Schultz: Three Wins at Three Palms Bv BRIAN COMEAU Spring Creek Motocross Park: Chris Bloyer topped the 250cc A class and placed fifth overall at the Pine Island Hare Scrambles in Millville, Minnesota. Pine Island Hare Scrambles Spring Creek Motocross Park Full Nelson at Pine Island the Spring Creek course mud and slop. But wishes don't always come true and, true to form, and with almost a feeling of deja vu from the spring hare scrambles, the C class entertained a growing group of spectators at greasy hill number one, as approximately 30 or so C-class racers waited patiently in line for their turn at trying the hill. However, these guys and gals really toughed it out, and only two or three actually called it quits at this stage of the race (about 2000 feet into the contest). Of course, there were helpful spectators that were also giving a hand to the racers that were trying their luck on the hill for the second or third time. By the time the first B-class racers were coming around for thejr second lap, most of the hiil had been cleared of Criders. By the end of the second lap, the course was tacking up, and the attrition rate in the B and C classes was quite low, with only 18 racers recording DNFs. Notable performers in the Band C races were overall C winner Lance Oelrich and overall B-class winner Matthew Losen. Also, six out of seven of the A- and B-c1ass ladies finished a heck of a tough race, with Wendy Caswell taking the A-class win and Jessica Van Vickie topping the Women's B division. Bv PAUL BLOVER MILLVILLE. MN. SEPT. 15 Larson's Cycle Radng/KTM-backed Kyle Nel- son was the overall race winner at the Pine Island Hare Scrambles, held at the Spring Creek Motocross Park in Millville, Minnesota. Nelson, who is District 23's 2001 Enduro and Hare Scrambles AA State Champion, rode another one of his typical ultrafast races. KTM/Moose backed Craig Holasek actually led the race for the first three laps, and early on it was looking like Holasek and Nelson were going to lock horns for the last couple of laps. The classic duel wasn't going to materi~ alize this time, as Holasek seriously injured his Achilles' tendon ..near the end of lap three in Spring Creek's infamous sand-wash section. Most District 23 and District 16 racers, families and friends know Craig, not only for his racing skills but also for his overall "nice guy" persona, and everyone wishes Craig a speedy recovery and hope to see him again at the front of the AA classes in 2003. With Holasek's injUry and the hard-charging Nelson reeling in the rest of the AA class up to this point anyway, Nelson just put it in cruise control and finished the race with a 3:24 cushion over second overall, Jesse Blomberg. Third overall went to Brother's Motorsports-backed Steve Adams, who had a very nice race, finishing 2:01 behind Blomberg. Fourth overall went to Austin Holm. The High Point A-class winner, Chris Bloyer, finished fifth overall. By the end of lap one, the AA class was pretty dose, with Holasek, Blomberg and Adams within striking distance of each other. At this point, Nelson was still in fourth place but charging hard. In the A class, Bloyer was in 13th place after getting jammed up in firstturn traffic. On laps two and three, Nelson methodically moved up to second place before taking over the lead for good after Holasek's race- and season-ending injury at the end of lap three. In the A class, Bloyer had picked off riders all the way up to first A, but fellow 250cc A racer Garrett Hansen kept the pressure on and only finished 18 seconds behind Bloyer at the checkered flag. This race being somewhat of a mirror Image, weatherwise, of the May Spring Creek Hare Scrambles, the less hardy Bs and Cs were wishing for a format change that would let the AA and As race first, to sop up some of 2 OCTOBER 23, 2002' eye CONROE, TX, SEPT. 21 Tyler Schultz made his mark on round six of the STC Stars Over Texas Night Series, going an impressive six for six to take overall wins in the 250cc Novice, 250cc Open and FourStroke classes. Schultz, mounted on a CRF450R, has been unstoppable throughout the entire series. The event itself had more that 360 entries and was originally slated to be the final round, but a rainout at a prior event means the riders will still have one last shot before the final points are calculated. Denver Posey jumped out to the early lead in the first moto of the Four-Stroke Open class, ahead of Tyler Schultz and Craig Porter. Schultz quickly put his Honda of Houston/JM Racing CRF450R In the lead, while Scott Minard moved into fourth. Minard was on the move, passing Porter before the end of the first lap and going after the leaders. Schultz had a clear track ahead of him, while Minard faced the task of getting around Posey. Minard got a break on the second lap when Posey made a mistake and gave Minard, as well as Porter, a chance to get by. Posey now found himself in fourth, ahead of James Calhoun, and he would stay there until the last lap, when a crash sent Posey deeper into the field, allowing Calhoun to take over fourth and Mark Smedley to move into fifth. Posey finished the mota in sixth. Schultz took the holeshot in the second moto and Minard found himself with a much better start, holding down second, ahead of Dennis Deriso. Porter was qukk to overtake Deriso, moving into third before the end of the first lap. Schultz continued to lead, though Minard stayed close throughout the entire moto. Behind them, the field was quickly established, with Porter holding down third, over Deriso. The top five would remain the same throughout most of the moto, with Calhoun's move into fourth being the only change before the checkers. The overall was the same as the second·moto finishing order, with Schultz taking the win ahead of Minard and Porter. When the Supermini class took to the track for the first moto, Steven Kurth came away with the holeshot, ahead of Matt Boehle and Max Swain. As the field came back around to complete the first lap, Ryan Grantom, who suffered a back-of-the-pack start, had moved into third, ahead of Daniel Garrett. He kept charging forward, moving around Boehle shortly after. Garrett was also working his way from out of the pack, passing Boehle shortly after Grantom as the two raced toward the front. Grantom had Kurth in his sights and passed the Honda of Houston rider as they completed the second lap. Garrett was holding down third, ahead of Swain and Boehie, while Daniel Castaloo lingered in sixth. Grantom continued to pull away from the rest of the field, running into lapped riders as he went. At this point, Grantom made a mistake that would cost him the moto without evening knowing it; Grantom continued to overtake riders even as he went through a section with a yellow flag - a violation of the race rules. Grantom came across to take the checkers, ahead of Kurth and Garrett, while Boehle held off Swain. Grantom's mistake cost him one lap, and the modified results dropped him to 12th, giving Kurth the win, ahead of Garrett and Boehle. Swain moved into fourth, while Cody Hedge picked up a surprising fifth. Grantom got a much better start in the second moto, taking the holeshot ahead of Boehle. Kurth quickly moved around Boehle, with Garrett and Castaloo in fourth and fifth, respectively. Garrett also wasted little time getting around Boehle, taking third before the end of the first lap. Garrett was putting a lot of pressure on Kurth, who was not cracking as the two battled for what would ultimately determine the overall. As the leaders began to encounter lapped traffic, Kurth seemed to gain an advantage, pulling away just enough to hold a comfortable lead on Garrett. Back up front, Grantom took the checkers and the moto win, giving hjm sixth overall, behind Max Swain. Kurth took second and picked up the overall win, ahead of Garrett. Boehle's fourthplace finish earned him third overall, ahead of Cody Hedge (5-6). Castaloo held on to fifth after a disappointing 19th in the' first mota, holding him to 11th overall.
