Swartz is still racing and winning. Now on a YZ426F, he smoothly rode to convincing double-moto wins in the Over 45 c1~ss, while keeping Honda rider Blaine Duecaster (2-2) ~t bay. Greg Irwin and Bemie Lyons, both on Hondas, fought over third over~lI. Irwin got the nod with his 4-3 score, besting Lyons' 3-4 tally. Duecaster did come back to win both motos in the Over 50 class, as longtime racer Bob McClain g~ve chase on a KTM. McClain look his no-nonsense style to second overall with a 2-2 perform~nce. Tr~ck local Dennis Sharrone Sr. took third overall on a Honda. One of the biggest groups of the day was the Over 30 B class. As the large pack exited the first tum. it was the 2000 Over 30 Amateur National Champion. Robin McClain from laGrange, Ohio, ~bsconding with the holeshot on the monstrous KTM 550. Darin Zaremba was holding down second on a Yamaha, with Tom Hudak Jr. following in his roost for third. Hudak pushed his Hond~ ~11 around Zaremba. trying to find a way past. McClain took the win, with Z~remba holding off the advances of Hudak for second. Fourth went to Robert Sparks, who made an impressive climb through the pack after a poor start on his Yamaha. At the start of moto two, McClain again timed the gate perfectly and blasted into first, with Hud~k. Sparks and Zaremba following closely. McClain didn't hold the point long, as Hudak took over the lead before the completion of lap one. A surprised McClain stayed right with him, as the two seemed synchronized around the entire course for the next three laps. aremba worked past Sparks into third as McClain muscled past Hudak on the fourth lap. At the checkers, it w~s McClain, Hudak, Z~remba and Sparks. With many riders camping over because of a District 12 race on Sunday, there was a good tumout for the pit-bike races on the Pee Wee track. Two riders who stood out were Jimmy Jarrett and Rudy Linder, who made their Hond~ XR I OOs look purely magical. Ohio Pro-Am Dirt Track Series Rounds 15-1 &: Hartford Fairgrounds Croton's a Cruise for Marshall Patrick Towler had for years resided comfortably in the 250cc two-stroke niche. This weekend, once again the two-stroke specialists from Michigan proved that size isn't everything, as he used his experience and talent to put the Saturday Senior Over 40 pack of big-bore four-strokes behind his 250 at the finish. Indiana's Joseph Ratz won Sunday's 125cc main, though not without a serious threat from 60cc winner Ricky Boley, who went out and won Sunday's 60cc feature, got a quick wipe of the face shield, and lined back up to challenge the 125cc pack. A TK rider Joseph Ratz took control early, but Boley and his hot little 60 were on the charge. Once in second, Boley worked a low line through three and four to close on Ratz. Ratz rode a higher line and was giving ground to Boley in the tums. Ratz tried to hold his line lower, but no matter how far down he got, Boley got lower nearly through the grass at one point. Finally, Boley squeaked by and into the lead. On the last lap, through three and out of four, the pair raced in tandem to the line. This time, Ratz's higher line paid off, as he raced his 125 ~cross the line first in a near-dead heat with the determined 60cc rider. Bryan Douglas managed to double his Prowin pleasure on Sunday. The Pro-Sport rider from Maryland found a line to his liking up near the baies and used it to perfection to race away with the money~c1ass victories. Most of his competition followed him up there but could not match the pace set by the hardriding Douglas. C8nadian Dominic Michaud challenged briefly in the 505cc race before settling for second. Douglas's traveling buddy and fellow Marylander Jason Isennock finished second in the Open Pro race. Third place went to Ohioan Nick Evans. who was aboard his brother's new Rotax after having crashed his own bike through the turn-three fence on Saturday. Evans vowed to have his bike and body b~ck in top sh~pe for rounds 17 ~nd 16. which ~re set to ~ke place in the aptly n~med Circleville. By CRAIG GRISMORE CROTON, OH, SEPT. 7-6 The Ohio Pro-Am Dirt Track Series retumed to the historic Hartford Fairgrounds for another weekend of pea-gravel, half-mile, dirt-track action - this time for rounds 15 and 16 in the 22-round season championshjp. The series had previously visited the pristine facility back in May for rounds one and two. This time around, the racing was a rough-and-tumble ~ff~ir: Dust ~nd ruts, holes, wet spots, dry spots, slippery spots, brushed-off stuff and deep stuff all combined to make for an interesting, exciting ~nd extremely challenging event. Several hard crashes occurred over the weekend, and a few riders were transported to the hospit~I, but thankfully all will recover from their injuries to race again. Canadi~n Jeff Metzloff seems to like it rough. Metzloff showed up with two Can-Am motorcycles end won three out of the four features he entered. His only loss came at the hands of veteran Mike Butler of Cincinnati. Butler rode his immaculately prepared Rotax to a relatively easy victory in Saturday's Senior Over 30 final. Ohio Amateur sensation Ricky Marshall did Metzloff one better, going four for four. MarshaJl, the weekend's biggest winner, dominated the Open Amateur and 505cc Amateur classes, winning all four features. Once again the Ohio Pro-Am Series is having trouble providing enough competition for the t~lented superstar, who just seems to effortlessly ride aw~y from ~II challengers. However, if this weekend was any inctication, there may be ~ new challenger in the making, in the form of Travis Sprong. A motocross racer from Somerset, Indiana, Sprong showed up 8t the race in Croton armed with stock-fr~med motorcycles and rode to two second-place finishes, behind Marshall. Sprong ~Iso went out and won both 250cc features. This guy may have found his niche in the roundy-round world of flat track. 64 OCTOBER 9, 2002' cue I • n _ VII' S Hartford Fairgrounds: Joseph Raa fought hard for his 125cc feature win at the Croton, Ohio, half mile, round 16 of the Ohio Pro-Am Dirt Track series.
