sian Une Motorsports' Gatlin Norgren ended up fourth. followed by Taylor Kotewa. JKRaceway Truesdale. Iowa R.sults: September 1, 2002 The second moto saw a repeat of Draper's holeshot, but that's where the similarities ended. Draper crashed in a bowl tum on lap two and had some trouble restarting his bike. Jones took over the lead and built a six-second lead over the now-second-placed Draper. A very entertaining charge ensued, as Draper seemed willing to stop at nothing to catch Jones. Lapped riders played a part in the drama, as Draper elected to attempt the monstrous finish-line double on his 65. Landing the obstacle cleanly, he was able to catch Jones with one turn remaining. As Jones seemed to ride with ice in his veins, Draper set up on the outside of a tricky step-up, preparing for a last-ditch effort, but he crashed violently into the face of the next jump. He remounted slowly but still had time to finish in second. He and Jones had built a comfortable lead over third-placed rider Norgren. Draper's 1-2 tally was worth the 65cc crown. Jones' 3-1 score earned him second overali. Norgren took third, and Faith (2-5) finished a distant fourth. 50 (4~6) SHAFT: 1. Bodie Wood (Yam): 2. Wade Brommel (Yam); 3. Austin Andrews (Yam); 4. Indeed, the two riders hit the checkpoint 50 seconds under the two-hour mark. Leivan got a quick splash of gas and then proceeded to apply the pressure to Forrester. When Forrester bobbled with a lapper, Leivan shot into the lead. From there on, Leivan had the course dialed, and he headed for home. It wasn't over just yet, though, as Forrester ban· zaied the last creek crossing and slammed into Leivan. "He driiled me pretty hard," Leivan reported. "The only thing that kept me from going down was hitting a tree. He said it was an lIccident, so I guess we're good." "I didn't have goggles and couldn't see," Forrester admitted. "I didn't really mean to get into him like that." When all was said and done, Leivan had win number four for the year, lind the dim light at the end of the championship tunnel got a little bit brighter, although Forrester seems to be in the driver's seat. Stone daimed his fifth podium of the year, in third, 43 seconds ahead of Shaw. Ricky Matteson grabbed fifth overall on his way to the A-class win, over Axo/Michelin/ Red Bull-backed KTM 200 rider Caleb Wohletz. Lars Valin rode his Honda to seventh overall, with Mark Gay and Anthony Meyer guiding their Yamahas to third and fourth in the A class and eighth and ninth overall. respectively. Richie Anderson rounded out the top 10. BY FRANK l..EIVAN SEDAUA, MO, SEPT. 1 It was "the veteran vs. the kid: as SCR/Yamaha rider Steve Leivan used age, experience and a fair dose of being in the right place at the right time to come out on top of a racelong duel with 18-year-old Brandon Forrester. The two riders thllt seem to have the best chance at the 2002 Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship crown pulled away from the rest of the field and engaged in a fierce battle that lasted more than two hours and 20 minutes. "It seems like dust has been a factor in a lot of our rllces this year, but today the condi· tions were perfect and we were able to really go at it: explained the Scott/UFO/Tsubaki/ NGK/Arai-backed Leivan. "I felt good all day, really comfortable and really confident." The conditions for round 13 at Lake Creek were nearly perfect and a welcomed relief for the racers who've been battling thick dust for the last few months. David Von Holten's crew laid out an B,g-mile course, with II good mix· ture of everything from single-track to fast field sections, whooped-out creek bottoms, and portions of the A TV course. Leivan and Forrester were the only two riders to complete six laps, and they did so with just under a minute to spare. Needing a challenge, Doug Stone picked the longest route to the first tum and promptly nailed his seventh holeshot of the year on his Stoneworks Honda. Next best once again was 300cc KTM rider Aaron Shaw, with Forrester in third. LeivlIn got off in an uncharacteristically good fourth. Forrester made an aggressive early pass on Shaw for second, and Stone was solid in front for a few miles before blowing a tum in a rocky creek and dropping to fourth. Leivan got around Shaw for second lind immediately went lifter Forrester, taking the lead in the tighter single-track section. "I knew that we would be close to going six laps, and I figured the longer race would favor me, so I picked it up and tried to put us on pace to do that: Leivan said. In doing so, Leivan and Forrester absolutely walked away from the rest of the AA dass. Stone and Shaw battled closely for third for much of the event, although Stone seemed in control of the position. Leivan fell on a slippery uphill on lap two while Forrester took the lead. The Moose/Factory Connection/Devol/ Dunlop/J& W Cycles-backed rider held the position until pitting for fuel just before the end of lap three, putting Leivan back in control on his YZ250F. It didn't take long for Forrester to catch back up, but a bobble in the whooped creek section put the KlIwllslllki pilot down. III was trying to go around the outside in the grass and hit a big rock: Forrester said. "It didn't hurt me, but it was a big crash." Once again, Forrester was forced to catch up, and he was up to the task, riding just off of Leivan's rear tire during the fourth lap. Leivan 62 OCTOBER 9, 2002' cue I &FI/AMP Fall Series Round 1: Hollister Hills &P Track Brandes, Nye Set the Pace BY JIM AND JOSTIN ENos HOWSTER, CA, SEPT. 1-2 With hundreds of eager riders and spectators converging on the picturesque Hollister Hills GP track, the GFI/AMP Fall Series got under way. With factory contingency up for grabs from all the major players, the AMP crew expected a huge tumout and therefore decided to go to a two-day race format. The decision was a good one, as more than BOO riders packed the facility over the holiday weekend and were treated to a superbly prepped track. With the state coming in a few weeks earlier and adding truckloads of sand, the normally hard-clay surface took on a new look and, in typical AMP fashion, it featured plenty of nasty ruts and braking bumps. AMA Supercross and Outdoor National veteran Michael Brandes found the conditions to his liking, as he dominated both 250cc Pro motos. Brandes, who just recently made the move from SoCal and now resides in nearby Aptos, pilots a BR1/Bill's Pipes/Troy Lee Designs/Spy/Shoei-backed Suzuki. He tumed a pair of second-place starts into huge wins at the checkers. While both Jeff Pestana and Kelly Andris grabbed holeshots in motos one and two, respectively, Brandes had taken over the lead within two tums both times out and simply pulled away. "The track got pretty rough, and I think my experience on the National scene for so many years was a big advantllge," said Brandes. "I had fun out there today, and I'm glad to be back in the area. I've ridden here off zmd on ever since I was on minis, and I like the environment up here. The people around here are real nice, and I pilln on racing the whole series." Moto two tumed out to be the best, as Pestana and Eric Nye, who just recently made his Pro debut, went at it for second. With Pestana hlllving taken second in mota one and Nye third, the two got hooked up at about the midway point, with Pestana holding down the sec· ond spot. Nye kept the pressure on and hounded Pestana for several laps, but Pestana, like Brandes, used his years of experience to try to keep the rookie at bay. However, Nye found a tight inside line on an off-camber tum and made the pass with two laps to go. At the checkers, both riders came across bar to bar, with Nye getting the nod. "' followed him around a few laps and set him up at the top of the hill," said Nye. "I came down the hill and just jumped as far as I could into the rough stuff and cut to the inside, but I made a mistake on the white-flag lap and he caught me and I had to push aU the way to the checkers." In 12Scc Pro action, Brandes was absent from the line, as he came with only a 250. In moto one, Pestana grabbed the holeshot aboard a Clawson Motorsports/Shlft/Fox/IRSbacked Yamaha, with Adam Miller, also a rookie Pro, and Nye in tow. Pestana, who knows the track better than anyone, looked poised to take the win, but Miller and Nye were not about to let him off that easily. The race soon turned into a three-way battle as Nye made the pass on Miller and both riders were hot on Pestana's rear fender. The pres- sure must have gotten to Pestana, as he made a crucial mistake that saw him go wide on a sharp left-hander. Both Nye and Miller scooted by, and, at the checkers, Nye finished comfortably ahead of Miller, with Pestana holding on to third. In moto two, Pestanl!l was a no-show. Miller grabbed the holeshot and a huge early lead while R. Jarid Blevins and Nye fought over second. Blevins, who placed sixth in the first moto, was on the gas and held off Nye for several laps, but Nye got by and found Miller with a sizable cushion that looked nearly impossible to cut. However, it being a nine-lap race, Nye decided not to settle for second, and he began reeling in Miller, eventually latching on to his rear fender. Then two huge mistakes found Nye losing huge ground and taking nearly half a lap to regain a passing position on Miller. However, on the white-flag lap, Nye made his move with a wild, somewhat out-ofcontrol pass on Miller over a tabletop and then outbraked him to the next comer. Nye held on for the win, followed by Miller, who took a second overall with a 2-2 score. "I'm pleased with today, because I came here and did what I set out to do: Nye said. "Brandes is so fast, and to finish second to him is fine with me. But taking back-to-back wins in the 1255 was great, and I had some good racing with Pestana and Miller."
