WMUAMA National Championship Series Round 7: Steel City Raceway Moroso Motorsports Park: Marco Martinez navigates the new corner during the Unlimited Grand Prix race in West Palm Beach, Florida. Take a Bau, Stefy By STEVEN BONNAU CS florida Region Moroso Motorsports Park DELMONT, PA, SEPT. 1 The WML/AMA's Honda/Dunlop/Alpinestars/Scott/Throttle Jockey/Sel Ray-backed Martinez Fastest, Luck Wins Most By liSA THEOBALD WEST PALM SEACH, FL. AUG. 25 Marco Martinez won another Shootout at Moroso and beat the track record he had set during the same race a month earlier. Since then, track officials reworked the new comer (tums five and six). Curbing was added and both the entrance and exit were modified, reshaping the previous and much harsher "z" shape into something more like a sharp "5." These changes added some speed to the tum, although not much. The average track temperature was 135 degrees Fahrenheit, and air temperatures felt only slightly cooler than that. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, Martinez mounted his GSX-R 1000 and put on a show to back up his number-one plate. Martinez dominated the Shootout after passing holeshot winner Ed lis on the first lap of the race. He was on the gas and picking up the pace. On the second lap, he set the new record with a time of 1:35.55 and opened a gap on Darren Luck. Lis, Scott Ritchey and Jim Pihokken were battling for third. Sy the halfway mark, Martinez had stretched it out and was cruising with a 10-second lead over second place. Pihokken had maneuvered llIround his pit mates to take over third place. Marlinez took the checkered flag as Luck entered the final tum. Pihokken, Ritchey and Lis completed the top five. "I didn't get such a great start," Pihokken stated from the podium. "My buddies were right in front of me, and I didn't want to stuff it in there too hard, so I did what I could. Darren was too far, and I knew Marco was gone." "He [Martinez] really flew," Luck commented. "I pretty much gave it everything I had. He's got that bike figured out." "It's awesome," said Martinez. "I had a great time. Darren ran an awesome race, and he got me earlier. I got myself together and put my head down and really worked on my cornering and braking. The Nationals have helped me a lot with my time today; it's gelling better and better." Earlier in the day, the Dunlop/GMD Computrack/Slais Cycles/Sharkskinz/Mr. Fix Itbacked Martinez won the Heavyweight Superbike race after passing Luck on the first lap and taking over the lead, which he would not relinquish. Sut, at the end of the day, Luck was by far the overall winner, with five victories and two second-place finishes. He started the day by winning the GTO race, but then crashed out of the GTU race on the third lap. Undaunted by this setback, he came back after lunch to win the Unlimited Supersport, Middleweight 80 OCTOBER 9, 2002' a U a • e Supersport, Heavyweight Supersport and Middleweight Superbike races, and finished just behind Martinez in Heavyweight Superbike. "I'm probably going to be doing some AMA races next year and some CCS and Formula USA, but not chasing the numberone plate," said the Nutec/Cheetah Sodyworks/ Indigo Sports/Leo Vince/Engine Icesponsored Luck. Suzuki/Pirelli/Vortex/ESC-backed Tim Hall used his SV 650 to finish behind Luck in the multiple-wins category, with three first-place finishes. He nabbed early leads and beat out the competition in the GT lights, lightweight Superbike and Heavyweight Sportsman classes. In the Amateur ranks, there was an amazing three-way tie for most wins between Ralph Fernandez, Alex Ferreira and Luis Noriega. Each racer went home with four first-place trophies. Fernandez rode the wheels off his GSX-R750 to win the GTO, Unlimited Supersport, Heavyweight Supersport and Heavyweight Superbike races. Ferreira's SV 650 took him to victory in the GT Lights, lightweight Grand Prix, lightweight Superbike, and Lightweight Supersport races. And Noriega used his GSX-R600 to win the GTU, Middleweight Supersport, Middleweight Superbike and Middleweight Grand Prix events. The National Championship Series was almost over. It all came down to the final event, with only 11 points separating Stefy Sau and Jessica Patterson in the quest for the overall cham- pionship. Delmont provided a perfect race weekend to finish out the season, with both perfect weather and a perfect track. As the girls blazed through the first comer in moto one, it was all Sheena Patterson. The Suzuki jockey rocketed into the le.d, with Lynette Wosick, Sau and Kristen Koukham hot on her tail. As they headed down the hill and through the whoop section, the running order changed dramatically. Patterson stiJl had the lead, but behind her it was now Sau, Wosick, Tania Satchwell, KX rider Jessica Patterson, and Tarrah Geiger. Sau quickly caught Sheena, and with an aggressive pass Sau had the lead and Sheena was picking herself up to restart in 10th. Sau now had a small lead, with Team Green's Jessica now in second, Geiger third, Satchwell fourth and Wosick fifth. Satchwell was on the gas and pushing Geiger hard. As Satchwell went for an inside line, Geiger went outside, trying to make a move on Jessica. Geiger got the edge for a split second, but Jessica's line held. Geiger slipped back and Satchwell went around. Then Geiger ducked competition will be fierce next season when these three move up to the Expert level. Satchwell challenged again and this time it stuck, pUlling Geiger back in fourth. Jessica and Satchwell slowly closed the gap on the leader, and within a few short laps Jessica was challenging Sau for the lead. The leaders went at it back and forth, with Jessica challenging at almost every comer. This lasted another two laps, and all the while Satch- well was right there, watching and not giving an inch to the leaders. As Satchwell was trying to make a challenge for second, she made a mistake and went down. That was all the breathing room Jessica needed and, with no worries behind her, she stuck it to Bau and took the lead. Jessica opened up a little gap. Bau, realizing she had no pressure behind her, kept Jessica in sight until the checkered fiag. SatchweJl lost a lot of time but managed to hold down third. Geiger finished in fourth, with a hard-charging Sarah Whitmore in fifth. Now the points difference between the top two was only eight. The second moto started similarly to the last one. Sheena jumped out to the early lead, with Jessye Davis, Geiger, Jessica and Sau close behind. Coming out of the rhythm section and up the first hill, Jessica and Sau made their way around and were now in second and third, respectively. Jessica went to work and soon had the lead. R.emisch made a huge move and jumped past three people to move into fourth. Jessica started to put a little time on the field, while Sau immediately went to work on Sheena. Sau went inside and out, looking for a way around for an entire lap, and she finally found a spot and gave it a try, but she bobbled. R.emisch flew past Sau and at the same time overtook Sheena. As Sau tried to regain her composure, Satchwell stuck it to her and moved her back to fifth. Sheena was not ready to give up and went after Raemisch. While the two fought for second, Satchwell and Sau caught up to them. Satchwell made the move quickly, first gelling by Sheena and then around Raemisch. Once in second, Satchwell started to puJl away and gain some breathing room. Meanwhile, Bau was on the move; she got past Sheena fairly quickly, though not without a fight, .nd now Raemisch was not cutting her any slack, either. Raemisch held her off for more than a lap and a half, but Sau finally got by. Now Raemisch had pressure from Whit- more, who was coming up fast. Whitmore came up hard and challenged Raemisch but ran out of lime and had to sellie for fifth. Jessica Patterson took the win, and her 1-1 score secured the overall. Satchwell held on for second, and her 3-2 score garnered Steel City Raceway: Stefy Bau took the championship title at the final round of the WMUAMA National Championship series in Delmont, Pennsylvania· by just three points ahead of Jessica Patterson, who won overall on the day. second overall. Sau, with a 2-3 tally, took third overall - and the championship, by three points.
