Round 1: Monster Mountain Motocross Parte
Askew Goes Off
in Alabama
By STEVE AND PEGGY CORIH
TALLASSEE,AL,SEPT.l
With the stifling heat of summer finally starting
to ease up throughout the Southeast, the fall
motocross season is beginning in earnest.
Monster Mountain kicked off the fall program
with a weekend full of activities that included
Bn AHRMA regional event on Saturday afternoon, the Miller Supercross on Saturday night,
and a race on the Monster on Sunday. Nearly
500 riders hailing from as far away as Iowa
showed up to do battle at one of the South's
premier racing facilities. Cool, overcast weather and outstanding track preparation by the
Southern Dirt crew made for an enjoyable
weekend for all.
Promoter Gary Blackwell and crew always
keep the younger ones in mind, and in addition to providing great racing for young and
old alike, Monster Mountain always remembers the less fortunate. A charity auction was
held Sunday to benefit Camp Sam, a summer
camp for children with cancer. Many items
were donated and a great deal of money was
raised for the cause.
Racing action was hot and heavy, with
nearly full gates in almost every class. In the
Pro diviSions, the story was Alabama's Drew

Knight.
In moto one of the 250cc class, Johnston
grabbed the holeshot, ahead of Askew and
Knight. Askew immediately moved to Johnston's rear fender and put the pressure on.

on the pegs, Askew tried every move he knew
to pass Johnston and finally, with about two
laps to go, he made the pass. Knight then
moved up to the runner-up spot, ahead of
Johnston, with Honda-mounted David Lowery
and Alabama's Josh Thompson rounding out
the top five.
Moto two was a wire-to-wire runaway for
Knight. Lowery, who finished fourth in moto
one, held on to second the entire race. Askew
went down on the first lap and could only
manage to get back to fifth by moto's end.
Knight's 2-1 tally gave him the overall, while
Askew's 1-5 score only yielded fourth.
Askew easily won the 125cc division, however, leading every lap.
Race seven was a combined moto featuring the Over 25 class and the 125cc B class
on a single gate. When the gate fell, the big
bikes took the lead, with Darryl Heisler out
front, followed by KX-mounted Mark Taylor,
CRF rider James Morrison, and YZ pilot Davy
Duprel. Behind these four was 125cc B rider
Eric Stewart, who was on the gas, and he soon
passed Duprel. Then Duprel retaliated and
repassed Stewart, and then both he and Stewart got around Morrison. Heisler pretty much
was in control the entire race, with Duprel finishing second. Stewart suffered a miscue near
the end and lost contact with the big-bike
leaders. He easily topped the 125cc class,
however.
In moto two, Morrison grabbed the start,
with Heisler in second. Florida's Lee Spann
passed Heisler early, but shortly thereafter
Heisler made an outside pass that caught both
Morrison and Spann asleep and he moved into
the lead. Meanwhile, Stewart, who was leading
the 125cc class, lay in fourth overall. Heisler
took the overall mota win. and Spann passed
Morrison for runner-up. Georgia's Shane
McElwaney took fourth, and racer/evangelist
Kevin Cozzad rounded out the top five. Stewart again topped the 125cc class, ahead of
Alabama's Adam Rector, Josh McCartey and
Georgia's Shawn McMichen.
The Mini classes had a great turnout, with
several nearly full gates. Only two riders managed to pull off double-class wins: Georgia's
Grant Ransdell and Tyler Jugel. Ransdell easily topped both the 50cc (7-9) and 65cc classes, winning every moto by a large margin.
Jugel won both motos in the Senior Mini class
and took the 85cc (12-13) win via 2-1 finishes. First-moto winner Ben Hamilton could only
manage sixth place in moto two, giving him
third overall, behind Jugel and another Georgian, YZ-mounted Dylan Daniel.
