CMC Trans-Cal Series Round 2: Honey Lake Motocross· Park Dana Corley fll. . _ the double Jump heading toward the finish line to take the overall wln In the Vet Intarmedlata c.... at round two of the CMC Trans-Cal SerI In Milford, Callfomla. Bv CASHEL HACKLAND PHOTOS BV DIANE GARLAND MILFORD, CA, SEPT. 8 one y Lake Motocross Park is renowned for its old-school style, which many a young motocrosser has found physically challenging. The second round of the CMC Trans-Cal Series, however, drew the largest number of Pro riders the track has ever seen. Being the first Trans-Cal race held at HLMXP, the majority of the competitors were rookies to the Milford-based playground... but this definitely did not deter them from showing their ability to ride. Professional snowboarder Shaun Palmer was among the entrants in the 250cc Pro class. This was Palmer's second trip to Honey Lake, having competed in the annual "Hangover Marathon" held on New Year's Day and placing first in the regular motos, so the race was definitely on, as Palmer and Erik Nye (a recent winner at Loretta Lynn's), among others, took to the line for their first moto. Palmer absconded with the holeshot, with Rory Sullivan in second. Nye rounded out the top three riders to enter the track. With Palmer and Sullivan battling out front, the race was on. Nye was biding his time to make the move he needed to take the lead. Nye got his opportunity when Sullivan went down hard on a tight corner rounding into Clubhouse Corner; Nye used this chance to move up to second. This opened the floodgates for the other riders and gave them all the motivation they needed to toss aside the intimidation caused by Palmer's presence. With Sullivan out, Nick Baugh moved up to second place. In the second moto of the day, Nye got the holeshot but nearly lost the lead to Beau Judge at the base of the JI triple jumps as the two fumbled in the berm. Nye was quickly up and leading the other riders before any damage could be done to his standings. Nye is new to the Pro class, after having won the Intermediate class at Loretta Lynn's and moving up, but there was no evidence in his riding to prove that he hadn't been a Pro for quite a while! With Nye out front, the battle was on between Tony Evans and Baugh for second place; as the two rounded the S turn before the uphill, they found themselves tangled up, and Evans went down as Baugh's momentum carried him straight into the Yamaha rider. Baugh never let go of the throttle as he remounted and continued, with only Palmer passing him. Lady Luck, however, was not on Palmer's side; he had to pull off the track due to a flat tire. A surprise comeback by Matt Bussell was also in the works; Bussell quietly used the other riders' misfortunes to gain positions. Bussell has been out of the circuit for a while but picked a perfect day to resurface. Nye used both his moto wins to place first overall, with Baugh and Bussell in second and third, respectively. In the aocc Open Stock class, Austin Howell of Red Bluff, California, took a surprising win over Tyler York from Reno, Nevada. Howell and York have long been competitors, and Howell has seemed content to take second (albeit a close second) in their battles. In their second moto of the day, Howell was off the gate and off the straight, rounding onto the track first, calling it his holeshot. York and Howell had gone one-two in the first moto, and Howell was not letting this one slip through his fingers. Howell is a fairly small guy, and this gives him the speed and agility he needs to ] 25 BEG: 1. Brandon Bell (Hon); 2. Kevin Mundt (5uz); 3. John Ripley (KTM); 4. Adem Marshall (Yam); 5. Howell was taking his Suzuki to new heights on the jumps; the realization that this was his moto and, after qUickly doing the math, knowing that this win would place him first gave him a literal push forward, and the momentum carried him over the finish line for a well-deserved first place. California appears to breed talent, as was evidenced in many classes on this day. In the 50cc class, 4-year-old Chezney Wosick (track owners Larry and Use's daughter) made her debut on her PW 50. "Daddy didn't just give it to me - I won it all on my own!" declared an ecstatic Chezney after having won her first medal; after being informed that she almost got the holeshot, her reply was refreshingly innocent. "What is a holeshot?" She intends to race again, and next time she promises to pose as a CN threat. Hoaey 1..1Ie Motocross Parll Mllfonl, Califomi. Results: September 8, ZDDZ (Raa d ZJ 50 BEG: 1.
