Not a bad pay day in the high desert of Southern California. Qualifying for this aO-lap race which had a total purse of $150,000 took place in special timing rounds during June, July and August. The top grid positions were already determined, but there was a mad dash on Saturday and Sunday to fiJI the rest of the grid. Since there were not enough timing transponders to fit the unusually large group, the official scoring team had to divide the more than 70 hopeful competitors in different timing heats. No wonder: just starting the race guaranteed a payoff of at least $ 1000.
