ufJD@ \!ll@[lO@) One hundred thousand plus. If we can raise more than that, we will. We raised $80K yesterday, and $2000 more today. We will easily eclipse our necessary number Monday. This is not a winner-takeall at this point, and how it will be distributed will be determined by how far we exceed our goal and how much participation we get. assigned land and not "owned," the tribal council can vote to cease any and all activity on said land. I certainly hope not. I have not heard of that being the case. I would hope that the AM and Doma would put the good of the sport before any politics. This is the best thing that could happen to soothe the disappointment, and guys like Roger DeCoster have jumped on board for that reason; they are concerned about the average fan. If the people that show up for this go home with a smile on their face, then we've done a good event. By TFS .Cycle News' moto photographer and Intemet socialite Steve Bruhn talked with Rick Doughty about this weekend's World Cup of Motocross, which Doughty is organizing - with some notable assistance. Q What is "The World Cup of Motocross" and who is the promoter and organizer? includes Roger DeCoster, David Bailey, McGrath Racing, Jeff Ward, Rick Johnson. Jeff Stanton, Marty Smith, Bob Moore, Troy Lee, Jim Holley, Jeff Matiasevich, Steve Bruhn, Greg Primm, Steve Bauer, Brad Zimmerman, Sharon Richards, Stefan Paetow, and more. It's growing by the hour. Q Did you have any involvement with Competition Park when they were preparing for the Motocross of Nations? A Yes, I did; I worked with them for about a month, basically securing volunteer help. I gave them support in terms of consulting. I was just there to help the MXoN as a project. In large part, I was there for my good friend Marty Moates, who was part of it. Currently - and it changes by the hour - we have 13 teams. Four are tentative, most notably the American team. It is our understanding that all three of the American riders have expressed interest in doing it, and they have the support of the factory. We will know Monday. Wouldn't it be a shame if this event took place in the states and the U.S. didn't participate? We have talked about opening up the competition to factory teams, like Team Kawasaki, but so far it's intemational teams. We are still open to the idea. One idea was a factory Kawasaki team with Bubba Stewart, which would create the one race everyone has been dying to see. We have 13 teams, and already secured $82,000 in purse money in 24 hours... and that was on a weekend, with everyone's doors closed! Q Since this is happening on short notice, how important will the Intemet be in getting the word out? A Absolutely critical. The Intemet has been our eyes and ears... it is the way we can get the word oul This thing has spread all over on a weekend because of the Internet. The Website address is www.worldcupofmotocross.com. and it goes online Monday. Q What kind of prize money will the World Cup have? the increased traffic and the death of a tribe member, may have convinced the tribe to shut it down. And it did. Almost everyone loses. What is the format, three motos? Will there be 125, 250 and 500cc riders? A It will be three motos, 20 minutes plus two laps, "run what ya brung." We won't set any 125/250/500cc requirements because it wouldn't be fair to the teams that came here with just 250s. WHAT NOW? Dorna had to reschedule the MXdN for October in Spain, and most of the top riders aren't planning on attend- Can extra teams join in, like "Team France 2?" We are going to open it up to other teams. If a second team wanted to ride, we would be open to that. If Pichon doesn't want to ride (and we know he is coming, and his bike is here), Roncada will step in. ing. Ricky Carmichael will be on his honeymoon when the Spanish race runs, Stefan Everts isn't interested, Q Will there be rules on noise and fuel like at AM events, and, if not, will there be problems with people who have AM-spec'd bikes ready? and neither are Mickael Pichon or Joel Smets - and those four comprise all of the main "contenders." In addition, many teams can 'I attend, as their funding is gone - New Zealand is A No. The magic of this event is, it will be minimalistic and wiU be a level playing field. There are no restrictions on fuel and noise, and no sanction. Q Has the AJoflA commented on the event? one such team. So, just as the 2001 MXdN will forever have an asterisk next to it in the record books because A What kind of support do you have for this event from teams? A ba Indian Casino (the tribe's primary source of income) more than once, and that, combined with the noise, Q A I am the head cheerleader and race director. This is Glen Helen's Q race. Other notable organizers are Greg Primm, from the Primm Coliection, and Roger DeCoster - and lots of other folks that have access to the Internet have been helping out. Our list of supporters A Q sex shop on the premises. In Competition Park's case, dust from the track had reportedly clogged the air-conditioner filters at the neighboring Sobo- A It is not an AJoflA event, but they have no desire whatsoever to impede the event. the American team (which was highly favored to win) was not in attendance, the 2002 event will as well except that this one will likely be for a Q Will people who bought tickets for the MXoN at Competition Park be able to use them for the World Cup? A What Glen Helen is going to do is give anyone that is holding a ticket for Competition Park $10 off for Glen Helen. Also, if you have a non·USA intemational passport, you will get in for free. Q lack of attendance by the very top riders from several countries. Notice we said "almost" everyone loses. There is a race, titled the World I hear there will be a celebrity race; who will be in that? A That would be the Fast Masters race. We expect to have Jeff Ward, Marty Smith, Broc Glover, Brad Lackey, Johnny O'Mara, Jeff Emig, Chuck Sun, Mike Bell. Georges Jobe, Gary Jones, Bobby Moore, Guy Cooper, Mike Keidrowski, Micky Dymond, Goat Breker, Jim Gibson, Ron Tumer, Larry Brooks, Bruce McDougal, and possibly more. Q Cup of Motocross, in the works for this coming Sunday (September 29, the original date of the MXdN) at nearby Glen Helen Raceway, and it will reportedly feature a S 100,000 purse. The race is sort of a replacement for the MXdN (see the Rick Thanks again. Is there anything we missed? A We need everyone at the team level to understand that this day is something that we need to do for our sport. Doughty interview at left), although most of the top Europeans reportedly aren't coming to the United States now anyway. So it's not actually a "replacement" race, though it will reportedly feature 13 teams. That said, the "Motocross of Nations" - because of several format Not a creature was stirring: Only days before, Competition PIIrtt was a bustle of aetlvltr In preparation for the September 2. So, now that all is final, what happens to the people who have already bought tickets to the Competition Park MXdN? Well, all we know so far is that they will be eligible to get S10 off of each ticket purchased for this weekend's World Cup of Motocross, courtesy of Glen Helen Raceway. And what happens to the new Competition Park facility adjacent to the Soboba Indian Casino? Well, the possibility exists that it may close down permanently. It's fully lit, has two permanent restroom facilities, a concession stand, and it's mostly freshly graded ... It could make a nice, free (for the tribe) park, or perhaps a decent nine-hole golf course. cu cl • n eN III 33 _ S • OCTOBER 2. 2002
