Motocross Championships and will market his line to industry and major national retailers in the near future, In an effort to promote motocross' best and enable fans to purchase their favorite riders' souvenirs, ASA has added one of the top 250cc riders in the country to its expanding list of licensed athletes. This year, Ferry finished a careerbest second in the AMAIChevy Trucks 250cc U.S. Motocross Championship. Ferry, the 1997 125cc Eastern Regional Supercross Champion, is expected to help fellow Team USA members Mike laRocco (another ASA licensed athlete) and Ricky Carmichael, bring home the Motocross des Nations trophy, "I like the Action Sports Authority T-shirts and I am excited to have one of my own," said Ferry of his ASA licensing agreement. He added: "Motocross has grown tremendously since my days as an amateur and it feels great to be a part of it. The ASA program just shows what can and will be done with our great sport. I am looking forward to being involved in ASA." Besides the Tshirt, ASA is developing additional products for its Tim Ferry line including fleece, headwear, and other collectibles, It's also working on agreements with motorcycle industry and major retailers that will sell licensed rider merchandise, including the Ferry line. After what can only be described as one of the blackest weekends in World Motocross, Monday morning arrived wjth Doma and FlM officials returning to the working week. Having done all they could to get the Motocross of Nations up and running at Competition Park in Southern California, the men who run the World Motocross Championships, World Supercross Championships, and many other off-road events, were not enjoying the toughest seven days in their motocross lives. We contacted both Doma and the FlM to find out what their take was on the Motocross des Nations, and were able to speak with Wolfgang Srb, the President of the FlM Motocross department. As 'always, Srb was trying his best to work out what the FIM could do to make the rescheduled Motocross of Nations in Spain on October 20 a success. Q I'm sure it's been a tough weekend A I am just back from Toulouse - it was really a great race, a real World Championship event. Q How are you after what happened on Saturday moming? A You know we did all we could, but when American law blocks what we had hoped to do... you have to stop and let the law take over. I am very disappointed. I know that everyone is angry and J understand how everyone feels, and It's a normal thing. We did our best, and I am so disappointed for the riders, teams and everyone, who is either on their way to America, or already there. Q What about those riders and teams, will they see anything in the way of reimbursement for the costs? A That is something we are working on. Of course, we will try and help the Federations who had to payout money for the teams_ It is, of course, our POSitiO>l to try and help with that. I understand many people bought tickets. Motocrosser Josh Coppins has signed to race the 2003 World 250cc Motocross Championship for the CAS Honda team. The British-based team that recently signed up Ireland's Gordon Crockard, will field both Crockard and Coppins on Honda CRF450s. Finland's Jussi Vehvilainen will move to the 500cc class. with Japanese rider Yoshi Atsuta also remaining in the team next year. The Japanese champion will continue to race a Honda CR250 in the 250cc class. Coppins. who finished second in this year's 250cc World Championship, is excited about this chances in the new environment. "I'm delighted with the help and support I've already been receiving from Honda in the UK and from Harry Ainsworth and his CAS team," said Coppins. "I will race the new Honda 450cc machine in the 250cc class and feel sure that I can be more than competitive against the likes of [Mickaell Pichon, [Joell Smets and [Stefan] Everts. It's been my dream to win a World Championship, and with the support from CAS Honda. that dream can become reality. " WSMX will host a motocross school at Aztec Raceway in Colorado on October 26. Class runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the cost is $150. The event starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m., with proceeds from the event going to the Glaser family, whose 11-year-old daughter, Kara, was involved in a serious motorcycle accident earlier this month and is in recovery at Children's Hospital. C o o c o o o o Clinica Mobile and ebay have formed an association to offer one of loris Capirossi's helmets for auction. The specialized medical organization, which looks after the riders of the motorcycling World Championships and is headed by Dr. Claudio Costa, has teamed up with ebay. to help raise funds toward the running costs of the clinic. The helmet was donated for auction by Capirossi after taking provisional pole position in Barcelona. Spain, on June 15 and is autographed and dated. On October 7-8, the Fire Police MX Nationals are slated to run rounds three and four of its 2002 series. The race will be held on the Motocross des Nations track at Competition Park in San Jacinto, California, according to event promoters. What about Glen Helen? Was at any time there a chance for them to take over the race? A We first had contact with Rick Doughty. I felt it was possible a chance, although had we had contact with Glen Helen direct, or maybe Roger DeCoster, it rnight have been better, we are not that farniliar with Doughty. We had also just been through the problem with Competition Park and we were a little nervous about making another mistake. We had to make a decision very quickly, and we knew people were boarding planes as we spoke. Q Now they are running a motocross race anyway at Glen Helen, with a huge purse for the winner, something like $100,000. It's a pity that Doma could not have taken that money and run the race at Glen Helen. A I'm not sure of what happened there. I don't know those details, so I cannot make a comment. Q What about the change to Spain? Many riders are not interested in going. How do you feel about that? A I understand their position. 1 hope it is something they will think about, and not make a decision at this moment. Many people are angry and I hope in a few days everyone will try and see what Is better for the event and the sport. Q It really is one of the blackest days in motocross. A For me personally, it is a complete disappointment. I mean, I love this sport, and to see the biggest race of the year being moved a week before the expected race day is really a major knock for the race's history. We will do our best to improve what has happened. I hope people give us that chance. The AMAIChevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championship set a new attendance record in 2002. continuing a trend of four consecutive seasons of solid growth, according to AMA Pro Racing. A total of 245.015 fans came through the gates at the 12 events for an average attendance of 20,418. This is the first Polaris Industries has announced plans to expand its engineering facility in Roseau, Minnesota. Construction is expected to begin on the $7 facility in this fall. Polaris manufactures ATVs. personal watercraft and the Victory line of motorcycles. Road racer Mike Smith is currently working at Moto Britilia in Woodstock, Georgia, helping the dealership run its racing programs. Smith is involved in both local motocross and road racing and he will also take part in various Supermotard racing activities in 2003. There is a chance that Moto Britilia will field a Formula Xtreme or Superbike team in the AMA Series next year, according to Smith. Former motocross and supercross champion Donnie Hansen will be conducting a one-day school at the Lake Elsinore Motocross Park in Lake Elsinore. California. on October 4. Another sign of strong growth in the series is that 10 of the 12 rounds enjoyed record attendance in 2002. The successful motocross season follows a recordbreaking season in the AMA Supercross Series last winter. "We are very pleased with the growth and development of our AMA Motocross Championship," said John C. Farris Jr., AMA Pro Racing's vice president of commercial development. "We believe a lot of factors came together to make this a record-breaking season. We had excellent weather for most of the rounds: a stepped-up PR effort between AMA Pro Racing and the NPG: and an improved ESPN television package. all which helped sustain this growth. The continued association with Chevy Trucks and so many of the other industry sponsors has greatly benefited the series." The 2002 attendance figures show a 22-percent increase from 1997 attendance and a remarkable 140-percent increase from just 10 years ago. In On Sunday.
