tinue for several laps until Boswell inadvertently bumped into LeFevre's rear tire and stalled his bike. Boswell attempted to re-enter the race but was later forced out due to mechanical troubles. As the race drew to a close, Huff continued to stalk Norrell. Sailing high and far over the jumps and broadsliding the comers, Norrell maintained his slight lead. As the white flag flew, Huff was still several bikeiengths behind Norrell. Despite his best efforts, Huff had to settle for second, as Norrell c1ajmed a welldeserved first-place plaque. The alwllYs- competitive Vintage Sportsman 500cc Expert class may have been short on entries, but definitely not on action. Grabbing a commanding lead at the start of mota one was CZ pilot Gary Faxon. Behind him, Husqvama-mounted Dwayne Scrivnor and CZ jockey Dave Bennett began what proved to be a race-long duel. As Faxon built an insur· mountable lead, Bennett and Scrivnor diced for second place. By lap four of the five-lap moto, Scrivnor was only a bikelength behind Bennett. At the checkers, it was Faxon taking first place and Bennett finishing about half a bikelength ahead of the determined Scrivnor. At the start of the second moto, it was Scrivnor grllbbing the holeshot, with Faxon right beside him. Getting a good drive out of the second corner, Faxon shot into the lead. As in the first mota, Scrivnor was soon engaged in a tight dogfight with Bennett. While Faxon pulled ahead of his competitors, Scrivnor and Bennett continued their own personal race. Bennett was able to put a good drive through the back part of the track and passed Scrivnor for second place. At the finish, it was Faxon grabbing the overall, with Bennett taking second place and Scrivnor taking a very close third place overall. Results IRONMAN vrrrr NOV: 1. Dave Thaenum (Mai). Brant Share Wins By ELAINE JONES COSTA MESA, CA, SEPT. 7 Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell and Scott Brant shared the main-event wins at Costa Mesa stands and went down in the next comer. Ross took third from Clark down the back straight on the last lap. Braunbeck held on for the win, over Hamlin, Ross and Clark. Fountain rounded out the top five. Hahr led moto two, but when the field sorted itself out after lap one, Braunbeck was in the lead. Hahr dropped to second, ahead of Hamlin and Clark. The race soon became a two-rider battle for the lead between Braunbeck and Hamlin, as Hahr dropped to third. Ross moved up to put the pressure on Hahr again. Hahr tried everything to keep Ross at bay, but Ross saw an opening on the last lap to get the third spot. Braunbeck outlasted Hamlin to take the win, as Clark held off Fountain to round out the top five. Jeffrey Tyson took four mota wins to win the 125cc Advanced and Youth (12-15) classes. Tyson beat out Kris Clark and Chris Belcher to take the 125cc Advanced win. Dane White led the first moto early until crashing. White moved back to third but did not finish the second mota. In the Youth class, Tyson, Camden Cruz and Chase Abood finished one-two-three each time out. In the combined Pee Wee 80cc classes, Joel Whedbee took the first-moto win in the 80cc (7-9) portion, while Michael Smith won the 80cc (10-12) portion. The two battled it out in the second mota to see who would be king of the Pee Wee 80cc class. Smith kept close but never made a pass, and Whedbee took the second-moto win. Joseph Coppola finished a distant third, and second in the 80cc (10-12) class. Matthew Burke was the fastest Mini rider of the day, taking four moto wins in the 85cc Advanced and Supermini classes. The fastest rider on the track was Shawn McKenna. He won the 250cc Advanced and Money classes. McKenna was challenged in the first moto of the Money ciass by Lance Stalls. McKenna lost the first moto of the 250cc Advanced class to Mike Finnegan, but came away with convincing wins in each class the second time out. Kris Clark tried to keep McKenna honest in the second 250cc Advanced moto, with second. Costa Mesa Speedway: Scott Brant (center) shared wins with Shawn McConnell in Costa Mesa, California. Apparently, he wasn't the only one that evening to get Into the spirit of sharing. Speedway. McConnell was the top dog in the Scratch main, while Brant earned the honors on the Handicap side of the program. Direct transfer to the Scratch main went to Brant, Josh Larsen, "Flyin'" Mjke Faria and Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz. One spot would be filled from the last-chance qualifier, and the lineup was a tough one. "Cowboy" Bobby Krips was on the pole, with McConnell in two, and "Gorgeous" Gary Hicks and "Fast" Ed Castro on the outside. The race was over as soon as the gate came up. The track had developed a blue groove, and McConnell is deadly down low - as the rest of the field soon found out. It was a wire-to-wire romp, and he would be the final man in the Scratch main. The pole went to McConnell, with Brant in two and Schwartz in three. On the outside were Larsen and Faria. Schwartz seemed to have the start, but when they reached the corner, McConnell and Larsen came out running one-two. For the first two laps, you could have thrown a blanket over the field, they were so close. Schwartz had slipped off the groove, but Larsen, Faria and Brant were still very much in it. On the white-flag, McConnell got some daylight, and that was all he needed to take the win. Larsen, Faria, Brant and Schwartz followed him home. Danny Perkins had the zero-yard line to himself as they lined up for the Handicap main. On the 10 were Kit Nay and Robbie Saurer. The 40 was loaded with Castro, Brant and McConnell. Faria and Larsen shared the 50. They were two laps in when Saurer and Faria tangled in tum three. On the single-file restart, Perkins was the leader, but it took Brant just one lap to move him off the groove and take over the front-running spot. Brant was gone, and McConnell was right behind him, hugging the pole, looking for the double win. There was one scary moment when Perkins and Nay became hooked together as they headed down the back straight, but they were able to separate themselves after they exchanged phone numbers. Brant took the win, with McConnell second. Brant also topped the Dr. Denim Challenge, ahead of Faria, McConnell. Northrup and Schwartz. The Sidecar main turned into a "demolition derby" when brothers Dan and Chris Jones got into it with brother Joe Jones. Joe's fiancee. Brandi McElroy, appeared to be the peacemaker as the brothers were each blaming each other for their collision coming out of turn two. Both teams were disqualified, and the win went to Scott Cole and Chris Sears. Mike Fontaine and Scott McElroy were second. Krystal Cramer topped the guys in the Junior Speedway main. David Lynch was the Support winner, and Mark Baldwin won the Support B contest. The Pee Wee winners were Jake Prendergast and Devin Foreman. IJaw)· SDCR: 1. Scott CoIeIChris Sears (Yam); 2.
