Sponsored by: Arrowhead Speedway Finale Arrowhead Motor Speedway Onthe Toss of The World Cup of Motocross consists of three 20 minute motos. aCoin There will be two support events: An 80 expert class and a Fast Masters Race. By ElAINE JONES SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 4 The final night of Speedway racing at Arrowhead had a full program of racing. The format for the first-divisions riders was an all-Scratch program: five rounds. and the rider with the most points is the winner. Ties would be broken with run-offs. With all the racing, the track developed a blue groove, and that was where you had to run if you wanted to win. It all came down to a coin toss, as Josh Larsen and Scott Brant ended the five rounds tied in points. Larsen won the toss, chose the pole. and the win and the track championship were his: He officially became the first Arrowhead Motor Speedway Track Champion. Shaun "Mad Dog" McConnell opened up the night's racing by winning the first heat of round one. "Fast" Ed Castro came out swinging, taking the second heat. Brant was in top form as he opened up with a winning ride, and Larsen went wire to wire to win his heat. Randy "The Rocket" DiFrancesco, who came up empty in the first round because of bike problems. took the win in the first heat of round two. Larsen came off the pole in the second heat and again came up with the win; it was foreshadowing the main, as he topped Brant. Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz came up with a Speedway 101 lesson as he won the third heat. Castro put together another good one to remain undefeated. With two rounds down, Larsen and Castro were both perfect. Lurking one point back were Brant and Schwartz. Schwartz was turning into a major player, as he opened up round three with a win. McConnell and Brant both won their heats, and Castro rained on Larsen's perfect score as he topped him in their heat, coming from the pole. Castro was now the only one with a perfect score. Larsen was back on track as he started the fourth round off with a win. McConnell edged out Castro, ruining his perfect record with a win in the second heat. Brant, the track points leader, won the next one, and "Cowboy" Bobby Krips had no trouble winning the final heat of the round. There was now a three-way tie for first between Larsen, Brant and Castro. Brant was on fire as he finished off his night with a convincing win in the opening heat of the final round, followed home by Castro. McConnell, also looking to be a major player, finished off the night with a win. Krips had an easy time of it in his final round. Larsen had a tougher way to go but managed to get to the checkered flag before Schwartz. When all was said and done, there was a tie for first between Larsen and Brant. There was also a tie for third, between McConnell and Castro. A coin toss decided choice of start. McConnell won the toss and picked the pole. The track had a heavy blue groove by now, and McConnell is a pole rider. It proved to be a fatal combination for Castro. McConnell got the gate, and even though Castro tried to make the outside dirt work, it just wasn't enough to catch McConnell once he settled on the pole. It would be McConnell on the podium in third. Larsen and Brant rolled to the line and the coin was tossed again. Larsen called it right and chose the pole. Brant opted to start on the outside, hoping to win the drag race to the first turn. Larsen cut the best gate and was out hard, but Brant was riding double with him, trying to get a wheel under him and slide him off the groove. Larsen should have wheel marks on his leathers; they were running that close. Brant tried everything he knew to get by, but Larsen could not be moved and the win and track championship were his. • Each participating nation is fielding a team of three riders.
