After falling the previous night and not making
the main event, Nate Adams redeemed himself and looked very smooth, busting out
everything with ease. His run was not enough
to over take Dustin Miller. who was in the hot
seat for some time. Renner came out looking
to take both nights, and it looked as if it was
his. Renner rode excellently, but in the judges'
eyes, it wasn't enough. Miller still had the hot
seat, with only Drake McElroy left. Drake went
off, busting completely out. After Drake's run,
the crowd waited quietly for his score. One
minute later, Drake McElroy won by .2 of a
point, over Miller.
All the riders were so close, it would be
tough to be a judge. Robert Distler put in an
unbelievable run on Friday, only to receive a
low score. Beau Bamburg went nuts and rode
great and was the only rider to do a Sterilizer,
but he still received a low score. However, in
the end, the whole show was great.

Portland Trail Riders MC
Great Racing
for a Great Cause
By MARIE-ANGElA DELLA PIA
PORTLAND, MI, SEPT. 7-8
The Portland Trail Riders of Michigan's AMA
District 14 holds a Charity Benefit Motocross
Race each year. The 2002 event brought in
riders from all over to help raise money for the
Clayton Memorial Foundation, which helps
injured racers, and all in attendance were very
pleased to be helping out.
Saturday's racing saw Indiana's Dustin
Pulley winning the 125cc A class. Pulley
scored three holeshots (counting a restart in
the second moto). He was strong off the line
and then led every lap, winning his final moto
by 37 seconds. Pulley also rode very strong in
Sunday's Purse race against some strong
competition,
Califomia's Mike Alessi made a stop on his
East Coast tour and did not disappoint. The
Honda Mini champion posted five out of six
moto wins en route to victories in the 85cc
(12-15), Supermini and 125cc (12-15) classes. Alessi only lost a single moto all weekend;
that one was won by none other than his
younger brother Jeff.
"I was going through a comer, and I went
to brake and blew the comer," Mike said. "I
looked down and saw my rear-brake lever just
hanging there."
Though Jeff did go on for the moto win,
Mike stayed in tow to the finish line.
"I actually thought I could pass him back,"
Mike said, "but I figured it was better not to
risk it, and save it for the final mota."
Sunday's racing offered a $5000 Pro
purse, which drew in the area's top talent,
including Michigan's very own Nick Wey. The
first 250cc/Open A moto was led by Jimmy
Wilson, who was riding for only the second
time since coming back from an injury. Wilson
led for the first two laps and was then passed
by Matt Crown, who led the next five laps.
Meanwhile, Wey WllS working his way up
through the pack from a ninth-place start. It
took Wey six laps to take the lead, and there
was no looking back.
In the second moto, Wey got a better start,
and he took the lead and won with 20 seconds
between himself and second place. After the
event, Wilson seemed very pleased with his
top-four finish,
and he's looking forward to a strong
upcoming season.
"I was just happy to be helping out the
charity," Wilson said. "The track was great,
and I had a great time."
"I had a great day, riding with friends and
family," said the winner, Wey. "I'd like to
thank Portland for putting on this event. The
charity is a great cause, and this was a great
way to do something good for the sport. I also
really enjoyed spending time with the youngsters here close to home, and this event is a
great way for me to do that each year."
