"The course was rough - it was pretty dusty out there," Garrahan said. "It was a little scary watching fast guys swapping out in the rocks and going down. I just couldn't get it going out there, so I rode a pace I was comfortable with." Kevin Hines came out of semiretirement to put in some of the fastest laps of the day. Hines worked his way through the pack from a dead-last start to finish fifth overall, putting in faster laps as the race wore on. He beat the field of regulars over a very rough, dusty and rocky course in Freetown, Massachusetts. Many of the regulars - including Team Green's Chuck Woodford and Honda rider Doug Blackwell - gave Hoess a good run for his money. Both riders led him around the course for several laps before Hoess took the lead on the sixth and final circuit. Woodford's day ended early, leaving Blackwell and Hoess to battle it out. "After Fred [Hoess] passed me, I kept on him and waited for him to make a mistake," Blackwell said. "Unfortunately, Fred doesn't make any mistakes, but ( did. Then I could not get back up to him." "It was really tough out there in the rocks," Hoess said. "I found it was really tough if I rode too slow, and dangerous if I rode too fast. There was a pace in between that seemed just right.
