BRIEFLY••• While just about every rider who competed in the HYR 24 Hours of Glen Helen praised the lay· out of the 10·mlle course. they were less than enthusiastic about the dusty conditions. When teams started arriving at Glen Helen on Friday to construct their pits. they were greeted by extremely dry condilions. including a bone·dry track. In previous years. sprinklers were running and water trucks were dousing the track by as early as Friday morning. but not this year. Accord· ing to Glen Helen's Lori Yarnell. because of the drought conditions in California. Glen Helen's wells simply dried up and there was no water to be had. 'We get our water from Lytle Creek. and the residents there basically have no water." Yarnell said. 'We have our own well. but ifs well beyond the red line. which means there's nothing left. Forty years ago. when the well was built. things have grown since then. With the Glen Helen Pavilion. the regional park. the Sheriffs training center and such. we use more water than ever, faster than it can rejuvenate itself. We were able to get some water from the regional park. but they put a regulator on us. so we didn't have much to work with. We're working on the problem. including re·drilling our own well deeper, but there's just no water here. - Despite the ultra dusty conditions. most riders dealt with the sit· uation the best they couid. and major complainls were few and far between. Their combined effort added In the four years of the 24 Hours" existence. the event has grown rapidly in popularity. In 1999. when the first 24 Hours of Glen Helen was held. 19 teams signed up. This year. there were 60 teams entered. And, of those 60 teams, 54 of them finished. This years race was also attended by some of the major factories. such as Honda. KTM and Kawasaki. who had an especially big presence at the race. Kawasaki entered two teams and worked oul of Pro Circuit's hauler that is normally seen at supercross races. Even Pro Circuit founder Mitch Payton was on hand to wit· ness the event and assist his team. "This is pretty cool." Payton said late into the night. The Davis team cranked out a up to 62 laps. total of 64 laps, totaling 640 miles. KTM also had a big showing al the 24 Hours. Even though the Austrian manufacturer didn't have luck on their side in the Pro class. they did emerge with a win in Ihe 251·0pen Expert class. Riders Tom Webb. Larry Roeseler. Charlie Morris. Mark nlley and Danny Guernsey actually topped the entire Expert class after busting out 59 laps. Also. KTM's Scot Harden teamed up with his sons Brent and Broc. Troy Lee. The evenfs sponsor. Honda/Yamaha of Redlands. came to Glen Helen with two teams and left with one class win. Not only did they top the 251-0pen Sportsman class. but they were also the top Sportsman team overall. The team. made up of Geoff Sanborn. Matt Bayer. Bob Maxwell. Brian Beach and Jason Jellerson. turned out 54 laps on a Yamaha VZ250F. Glen Helen owner Bud Feldkamp decided to get in on the fun. He took one lap around the 10· mile track on his newly purchased KTM 525. Feldkamp said he "loved it. • eN Six riders were "crazy- enough to sign up for the lronman class. and the winner was KTM rider Rick Daniel. Daniel. who also won the Ironman class at the 12 Hours of Glen Helen a few months earlier. completed 38 laps. topping Randy Olson's 34. Just to show you how competitive the Ironman class was. Gary Taylor. who had the dubious honor of finishing sixth. still turned in an impressive 23 laps. He reportedly got so tired that he simply could not get up some of the hills and was forced by officials to pull off and rest. A handful of employees from American Honda got together and entered a team in the Business class and came away with the win, despite one of their riders crashing their XR400 and destroying the headlight. They managed to get back going without losing too much time. The team was made up of Doug Toland. Steve Howe. Chris Blaise, Mike Hacker, Mike Jongkind and Dave Potter. Honda's Bruce OgilVie aiso competed when he wasn't helping man Johnny Camp· bell's pits. OgilVie teamed up with Bob Rutten, former National MX Champion Gary Jones, Andy Jefferson.
