Northern Cup Motocross Series Round 9: Denmark Sports and Competition Wallace 2-2 Good in Denmark By PETE EMME DENMARK, WI, AUG. 25 Some 480 eager entrants showed up to do battle at Denmark Sports and Competition, where intense points battles were at stake during round nine of the Northern Cup Motocross Series, as were District 16 points. Heavy showers the night before left the natural-ter· rain track a mucky mess for practice. The track did shape up nicely after the first set of motos, but for those getting a poor start in the first moto, chances were that their results would look the same. As the gate dropped for the ultracompetitive 125cc B class, Suzuki rider Broc Stroebel gunned up the hiU from the inside to get to the comer first, but he was quickly overtaken by Craig Wallace. Jake laCount and Andy Zambon as they rocketed to the outside, never let· ting off the throttle. When the screaming eighth-liter machines finished the first lap, Yamaha thumper rider Wallace had the lead, with LaCount a close second. Moving into third was Honda pilot Jon Tullberg. Stroebel and Zambon were very close behind. laCount made up some ground on the blue streak, but as they entered the newly redesigned whoop section, Kawasaki jockey LaCount attacked the rockers at a blistering pace to overtake the leader. Zambon. who is a regular front-runner in the class, wreaked havoc follOWing the whoop section in the next comer but quickly fell in the next comer leading to the uphill. He bailed; by the time he looked over at hIS Kawasaki, it was being run over by heavy traf· fie. Needless to say, Zambon remounted in a disappointing last place. behind 19 riders. LaCount looked smooth for the next few laps as he gained ground on the pack. LaCount moved out to a three-second lead going into the third lap but lost some ground on Wallace near the spectator plateau. Wallace reeled in his friend, but laCount held him at bay. LaCount took the win, over Wallace. Matt Mraz sneaked in with third by working diligently through the pack. Tuilberg and Jesse Allen rounded out the top five. Zambon took his frustration out on the rest of the field by capturing the second-moto holeshot. It was a blessing for the youngster from Michigan, who had fallen victim to the track in the first mota, finishing 13th. Zambon clearly rode better than his counterparts in the opening laps of the second moto. First-mota winner laCount had a poor start and rounded out the first lap in 13th. Meanwhile, Wallace moved into second, with Ryan Zuege in tow. They were no match for Zambon, as he put one to two seconds per lap on the field. Another front-runner in the first mota had problems; Mraz fell victim to the track on the second lap while running in the fourth posi· tion. Zambon checked out with the big win, but his 13- 1 tallies would only land him fifth overall. Wallace's consistent 2-2 scores got the young Yamaha rider an overall win. Allen wound up in second overall via 5-5 mota finishes. Kyle Schneider went 7-4 for third. laCount lost some points with a 17th in the second mota, which, combined with a first in the first mota. put him at 10th overall. A few other riders had a perfect day, garnering two moto wins in their respective classes.
