champ. The two stars led the entire competition, with the exception of the terrific beginning by Spaniard Cobos, who ultimately made the podium as well. As the zones became difficult, it became more and more clear that Lampkin and Fujinami are at a level above the rest, and before the final two sections of loop one, the Brit led by one point. Lampkin fived the final section, however, and the Japanese rider's three there enabled him to move ahead. The second loop - ridden quickly, as usual - saw Fujinami stay in front, and he was confident of his win when he arrived at the finish. However, the observer of loop two's first section had punched his card with a five instead of the proper three, so it appeared that there was a tie, with Lampkin getting the nod based on more cleans. The podium ceremony was performed, but just before the press conference, Fujinami's protest was upheld. The Honda-Montesa camp was happy - with Fujinami for winning the day, and with Lampkin for mathematically clinching the title. DAY 2 The organizers slightly simplified a few sections, and the morning weather was improved, but the day still offered one of the tougher courses of the year (the rocks were still muddy from the day before). Lampkin was eager to put an exclamation point on his year, while Fujinami was intent on notching another win in his home, so a lot of time was spent by the riders studying sections during the first loop. Both riders started badly, falling in section one, but they recovered and along with Cobos - rode at a level above the others. Meanwhile, the rain returned. At the halfway mark, Lampkin led with 21 marks, Fujinami another five back, and Cobos one more in arrears. The next-closest rider was Kenichi Kuroyama, with 34! Not having much time to complete loop two, the top three riders limited their section-examinations and sped around the lap, while Kuroyama, who had managed his time better, took his time and turned in a very impressive 18-point loop-two ride. Fujinami scored a 23 - better than Lampkin, but only by three, so the champ was awarded the day's win. Kuroyama collected the final podium spot.
