This brought to the line the night's key heat, as Hicks, Larsen, Harmatiuk and Krips rolled to the line. At stake .were Hicks' perfect score and Harmatiuk's and Krips' shots at the main event. If this wasn't enough suspense, Hicks' bike caught fire as he brought it to the line, but track crews got the fire out and Hicks made it to the starting line on time. Hicks got the holeshot, but Larsen hounded Hicks for the first lap and then made his move, sweeping around the outside to take the lead and the win, with Hicks second, Krips third and Harmati uk fourth, spoiling their chances at the main event. The final round ended with Castro winning his race. 50 it was Hicks, Larsen and Castro all going to the main event with 11 points each, while Blaydes ended up with the final spot in the main. On the start. Castro, Hicks and Larsen ran side by side into tum one, with Larsen emerging with a slight advantage as the field headed down the back straight. Castro made a move on the inside of Larsen but the two touched and Castro went wide, allowing Hicks into second place. JO It was Tom Sephton's night at Action Park, as he took the win and the title of New York State champion. With the return of Warren Diem, the heat races were intense. Diem was out for a year and a half due to a back injury. In Diem's first race back, he went up against two new riders in Division One, Lee Bailey and Josh Carr. Diem took the holeshot and the win, letting 'em know he wasn't going to take it easy. w making your racing experience pleasant and one to remember. " - By lEE UvESEY Tom Burge, Cam Rafferty and Sephton all iooked strong in the heats. Rafferty and Sephton made it into the main without having to run in the semi. Sephton looked like the strongest rider, winning all his heats. Rafferty's and Burge's only losses came at"the hands of Sephton. Burge had a rough race in the semis, but he held off Mikey Robinson. Diem took the holeshot from the inside and led the whole race. Jerry Harmen advanced to the main by winning the last~chance qualifier, putting him in the outside gate. Sephton came out of the middle gate, cut to the inside and came out of the first corner in the lead. Rafferty stuck to the outside and got some good traction. which allowed him to get in front of Burge and Diem. Rafferty got wild going into the first corner on the second lap, going out to the wall and into a wheeliel Burge and Diem flew right underneath Rafferty. who looked frustrated: to make matters worse, he fell on the last lap, and Harmen went right undemeath him. Sephton led the entire race; he just pulled away from the pack. Sephton took the checkers and the New York State championship. Support A was full of excitementl All the races were close between Merle Craven, Keith Hawkins and Marc Gauthier. These guys were swapping places all night. In their main. Gauthier. with a 1a-yard advantage, held the lead for the first two laps. Then he made a mistake and Craven capitalized on it: Gauthier got too wide in comer four, allowing Craven to get by on the inside. Craven rode to the finish and took home another win. In Support B action, Chip Lengle was on a mission. In the first heat, he came all the way from the back on the Handicap start to take first in comer one. Then, in the main, Lengle once again came blasting up from the back, but Scott Swinehart held him off in the first corner. Lengle was determined to win this race; he passed Swinehart on the outside on the next lap. Bob Bruzek and Casey Donholt made their way up to the third and fourth, putting pressure on Swinehart. Trying to hold them off, Swinehart pushed too hard and fell. The others got by him, while Lengle extended his lead and won the race. Congratulations to all the New York State champions on their wins.
