SIERRA VISTA, AZ, AUG. 25 MX racers braved the 90-degree-plus weather on Sunday and set a NOMADs track record for participation. The NOMADs board and committee had expected a strong turnout for the opening round of the Heat/Freeze Motocross Series and expanded the parking and pit areas, and completed additional grandstand seating for participants and spectators in the weeks leading up to the race, but, at 205 entrants, the turnout surprised even them. Fnmk Febbo, motocross racer and coowner of the Mammoth MX facility where half of the eight-race Heat/Freeze races will be hosted, was at NOMADs to see the series' opening round. He said the Mammoth MX staff expected no more than 150 entrants for this first round and were equally surprised by the large turnout, but that the staff handled it well. The quickest lap times were seen in the first mota of rllce seven. Ryan Wilson, a professional motocross racer from Tucson, was on hand to do battie with local Pro Tom Stuckey in the Pro division. Wilson ended up with a big lead over Stuckey, as Stuckey was forced to endure carburetor adjustment problems for the entire six laps and had to settle for second place. Stuckey finished second in the Big Bike Open class as well, behind another Tucson Pro, Justin McMurrich, Racing was tight and competitive in the first combined 250cc Novice/Intermediate moto. Cliff Brandon got to the sweeping tum first, ahead of Don Shin, Kevin Kramer and Tilford Barton, after the start gate dropped. Barton appeared to be the best of the field when he moved quickly to the front by the end of lap one, but then Robby Delancey moved into second and stayed right on Barton, look- 9/1V20Q2 9/14/2002 9/14/2002 9/1512002 9/17/2002 9/17/2002 9/17/2002 9/17/2002 9/17/2002 9117/2002 9117/2002 9117/2002 9117/2002 9/17/2002 9117/2002 9117/2002 9118/2002 9118/2002 9/18/2002 9118/2002 911912002 9/21/2002 LON~ 7:30 PJI, 8:00 PM 3:30 PJI, 2:30 PM 4:30AM 7:00AM 9:00 AM 11:30 PM 7:00 PM 12:00 AM 11:00 PM 9:00 PM 10:00 AM 12:00 PM 7:30 PM 12:30 AM 8:00 PM 1:00 AM 6:00 PM 7:30AM 2:00AM 7:00AM 5:30AM 7:30AM 7:00AM ENTER AND WlNI AU.
