When Bragg got hung up in a deep groove for a split second, Traxler whaled the outside line for the pass. Atkinson won moto one, with Tr?lxler catching up with him and claiming second, while Bragg hung on for third. Goggles down, elbows up, throttles pinned; with the drop of the gate, moto two came to full song. This time, Bragg used the quickness of his RM250 to snag the inside groove and the holeshot with some smooth moves. Traxler went peg to peg with Atkinson and got the upper hand in the first couple of comers. Larry Kosowski, Steve Fregoe and Carmen would battle bar to bar to bar for the fourth through sixth running spots. Atkinson pulled alongside, then challenged, and finally passed Traxler. Bragg knew he needed to capitalize on his cornering advantage over Atkinson and his KX500. Bragg tried utilizing the outside lines to hold Atkinson off for a lap or two, but Atkinson had power to spare for the straighter CMA Bounty Hunter MX Series Round 5: Kings County Fairgrounds A Trip to the Woodshed sections of the big track. Then Atkinson saw his opportunity and pulled the trigger on the big 500, flying up the uphill section and muscling his Kawasaki past Bragg. Now Bragg was locked in a battle with Traxler for second on the final lap. Peg to peg and tire to tank, these two fine competitors duked it out on their 250cc machines for the whole lap. Atkinson (1-1) took first overall. Bragg (3-2) claimed second overall in a crowd-pleasing photo finish, relegating Traxler (2-3) to third overall. If, and when, the "500cc Nationals" By EDDIE GRAVELINE HANFORD,CA,AUG.17 The initial four rounds of the CMA Bounty Hunter Series have seen four different winners take home first-place purses in the main events. Most of the previous winners were on hand for round five in Hanford. American Honda's 15-year-old sensation Daniel Sani had won the previous round in fresno, defeating a group of seasoned Pros, but he wouldn't be able to sneak up on any of them again. As fate would have it, Hanford hosted what was probably the most talented field of riders yet. Professionals such as Daniel Blair, Michael Young, Nathan Woods, Mike Mason, David Boothe and Billy Jurevich came to do battle with a host of top Intermediates, including Casey Hinson, Josh Cox, Sani and Matt Gaines. The stage was set for a great show. The CMA did its part to make the event spectacular by creating one of the most grueling tracks to date. In addition to the requisite double and triple jumps, a long section of supercross-worthy whoops and a couple of uphill rhythm sections were added for extra flavor. The track was also set up in a way that made the entire course easy to see from the spectator areas - which was a good thing, because more than a thousand people showed up to watch the action on this beautiful evening. Most of the Amateur riders were young guns in the 125cc class, which made those qualifiers particularly interesting. Powerhouse Yamaha's Woods and Wilson's Motorcycle's Cox got great starts on their four-strokes in the first race, but no one was giving up early. After a couple of laps, Blair caught up to Cox and eventually passed him, but Woods was already out of range. Cox didn't have it easy after that, either. His next attacker was none other than Mota XXX ace Young, who had come up through the pack. Despite having to work so hard for position, Young threw every- make a return, watch for Ben Atkinson to be there. Great sportsmanship was displayed throughout this class, as riders gave each other thumbs-up at the finish line and many riders waited at the end of the track to see how everyone else finished. This was a great race for many of the young riders to witness, and this class could well contain the very role models young motocross riders look to for guidance as they grow into this great sport. Sani had also moved up on Cox during the race, but he had a scary crash in the whoops; he wasn't hurt, but he fell to sixth. In the final 125cc qualifier, Woods got out front early again and ran away from the pack. Behind him, Young and Sani got better starts than in the previous moto. Young eventually came out on top of the resulting skirmish. The 250cc qualifiers featured some of the same guys as the 125cc, but also included Arenacross regular Mason and local favorite Boothe. Once again, Woods showed that he was the man to beat. He dominated the first mota aboard the same YZ426F that has helped him to third place in the standings in this year's AMA Western Four-Stroke Nationals. Blair and Young followed him across the finish line in the first race. The second moto saw Woods' unbeaten streak come to an end, as Mason rode the wheels off his Honda on the way to victory. Woods was right there. however, and his 1 ~2 finishes were still good enough for the overall class victory. Bounty Hunter races make things interesting with single-file starts. The riders are placed based on their qualifying performances, with the fastest in the back. The odds were stacked against Woods, but he didn't seem to be worried, The crowd was about to see why. When the green flag waved, Tony Wolf jumped out front on his Yamaha. A group of six riders or so formed behind him and worked to sort themselves out. Jurevich broke through and took the lead about five laps into the race. Though he looked comfortable out front, Woods and Young were also coming up fast. After gaining second place, Woods stalked Jurevich for a lap before passing him on the inside after going through the whoops. Young was ripping and actually appeared to be gaining ground on Woods until he fell while running second. At that point, there was only one man who had a realistic shot at Woods: Daniel Blair. Young's crash set the table for Blair's charge, and the Northern Cali~ fornia speedster didn't disappoint. With about five laps to go, he began chipping away at Woods' lead in workmanlike fashion. With two laps to go, the gap had been closed to just a few bikelengths. Blair tried a risky move in one of the rhythm sections on the final lap and almost crashed, giving Woods the cushion he needed to take the checkered flag and the lion's share of the purse money. Third place went to Clovis' Boothe; it was the first race for the Moto One/Motopress.net rider since injuring his shoulder back in June, and also his first race aboard a new four-stroke Honda.
