The huge attendance, bigger than that which watched the last World Final held at Ullevi in 1991, roared its approval for Adams, even though he beat home favorite Tony Rickardsson to the line in a pulsating final. It was a superb Grand Prix, fitting for speedway's return to one of its fonmer spritual homes. Adams, one of the most popular riders on the GP circuit, has been without a win In his eight seasons of racing, but this month has already proven special for him. Wife Kylie presented Leigh with a daughter, Casey, last week and he admitted: "It has been a fantastic few days for me. This time a week ago I was at the hospital with Kylie... now I have a daughter and a GP victory." Rickardsson, who made his first World Final appearance here at Ullevi in 1991, when he also finished second, looked the firm favorite to win. "My preparation was. perfect," he said. "I felt really good. But on the night, Leigh proved the better man." Rickardsson can take consolation from the fact that, although he missed out on victory, neither Ryan Sullivan nor Jason Crump, his two nearest championship rivals, reacbed the Final. Rickardsson now has a nine-point lead over Sullivan with Crump a further 15 behind. With three rounds - in Poland, Denmark and Australia - still to go the title race is still wide open. Adams has closed the gap, and American Greg Hancock also improved his position with fourth place.
