AHRMA Road Racing Series Rounds 15-1 &: Putnam Part It's Shoen Showin' 'em the Way start of lap seven, except that Shoen now has a nice lead on Moeller and Swartout. As the white fiag signaled the final lap, Shoen had a strong lead over Moeller and Swartout. Meanwhile, Jacquay and David Rutherford battled for fourth. At the checkers, Shoen had first place nailed, with Moeller second, Swartout third and Jacquay fourth. As the 750cc Sportsman field roared down the straight, Dave Temple led the group into turn one. As they began lap two, Temple still led, with Yamaha-mounted Mike Dixon second and Triumph rider Todd Welch third. On lap three, Temple began to build a lead over Dixon, with Welch still in third on the way onto the infield. On lap four, Temple was looking strong and smooth as he began to extend his lead over Dixon and Welch. Triumph-mounted Craig Murray was fourth. By halfway, Temple had opened a strong lead over Dixon, Welch and Murray. Lap six showed little change in the running order, but as lap seven began, Temple still had the lead, but he was now chased by Welch, with Dixon third and Murray still fourth. After they chased each .other through the infield to th~ checkers, Temple placed first, with Dixon second and Murray a close third. Due to the threat of thunderstorms, Sunday's races were cut from eight laps to six to get in a full schedule. By GREG POOLE PUTNAM PARK, IN, AUG. 17-18 Big fun and nearly perfect weather were the order of the day for rounds 15 and 16 of the AHRMA Road Race Series at Putnam Park, lndiana. Some 2] 5 riders turned out to contest 12 races over the two days of the event. All classes featured great racing, but the Sportsman classes were especially hot, with plenty of action for all to enjoy. On Saturday, the 500cc Sportsman start was a real drag race between Paul Shoen and Honda rider Jim Swartout, who had a slight advantage at turn one. By lap one, Swartout was in the lead, closely followed by the rest. Across the infield, Shoen took the lead on lap three, only to be passed again in the straight by Swartout and Bill Moeller, making it a tight group of three. Shoen, Moeller and Swartout continued to battle around the back of the course and down the front straight through lap four. On lap five, Shoen pulled a slight lead over Moeller and Swartout as they began to make their way around the infield with a good lead between them and Honda riders.Lane Jacquay and Kent Becker. On lap six, Shoen got his BSA warmed up and sorted out as he pulled a three-bike lead over Moeller and Swartout as they made their way toward tum one. The leaders remained unchanged as the riders headed down the long straight at the It was a clean start and another drag race down the front straight for the Sportsman 500cc class, with a tight pack entering turn one and heading for the Infield. On lap two, Moeller led the way over Shoen for a repeat of the previous day's dogfight. Across the infield, Shoen moved past Moeller going into lap three..Laps four and five revealed no changes, as Shoen still led, followed by Moeller and Honda riders Tim Kinsey and Gale Harkness. At the finish, it was Shoen again putting it to the Hondas. Kinsey was able to put a wheel in front of Moeller for second place, and Harkness finished fourth. The green flag dropped for tne 750cc Sportsman contest and Temple nailed the start and led all who would chase him. As the riders sorted themselves out across the infield for lap two, Temple was charging hard again, followed by Dixon and Jeff Morr. With two down and four laps to go, Temple still led the pack, with Dixon and Murray in second and third. Halfway through, Temple had a commanding lead over the pack. Murray "(as able to put a wheel in front of Dixon, going from third to second. On lap four, the gap between the front-runners was but a second apart, with Tempie first, Murray second, and Dixon a close third. As the pack moved around the infield, Temple opened up his lead for the final lap with a comfortable gap back to Murray and Dixon. As the riders came to the checkers, Temple crossed the line first, with Murray second, Dixon third and BMW rider Jerry Settle pushing past Morr into fourth place. Putnam Park Putnam Park. Diablo Paintball Can-Am 125cc GP Challenge Round 5: Grattan Raceway Nodell Wins Round 5 Barn-Burner By THE DUKE Putnam Park: James Swartout (882) leads Paul Shoer, (172) and Bill Moeller (325) through Big Bear turn early in the 500cc Sportsman race at round 15 of the AHRMA Road Racing Series in Putnam Park, Indiana. 66 SEPTEMBER 1 1 ,2002' cue I e n e _ s GRATTON, MI, AUG. 25 The penultimate round of the Diablo Paintball Can-Am 125cc GP Challenge took place at the technical, 2-mile Grattan Raceway, just outside Grand Rapids, Michigal'\, where Stuart Nodell, aboard the Canada Post Honda 125, fought off Dave Wright by half a wheel to bring home a hard-fought victory. Corey Sherman had a nasty get-off during practice on Saturday, badly bruising both ankles. Sherman had wanted to try to make the final, but his ankles were too badly swollen to get his boots on. Nodell came away with the Durmach Pole Award, but not without a serious fight. Nodell was on pole with a 1:24.032, just edging out young gun Nick Cummings, who clocked in at 1:24.126. The front row was rounded out by Mark Gonyou in third, at 1:24.306, and series points leader Dave Wright, at 1:24.846. At the start, Cummings nailed the holeshot, but Nodell took the point as they went into the second comer. Nodell and Cum· mings had Wright and Gonyou right on their tails as they drove down off of turn four and towards the jump right before turn five. Over the jump, Gonyou went inside Cummings as they dived into turn five to snatch second place from him. Gonyou was a man on a mission on the opening iap. As the lead pack went down the back sweeper toward the tum·nine bus stop, Gonyou slipped under Nodell, squared off the corner and took the lead as they charged uphill through the esses and onto the 3000foot front straight.
