AHRMA/Speed & Sport National Vintage MX Series Round 12: The Farm at Chehalis STORV AND PHOTOS BV ClAV LIGHT CHEHAUS, WA, AUG. II Z-mounted Mark Skarpohl's journey from Mankato, Minnesota, proved to be a successful crosscountry trek, as he reaped a bountiful harvest at the fifth annual Chehalis Classic at The Farm. Skarpohl rode a trio of CZs - a 1967 360, a 1967 250, and a 1973 400 - to impressive 1-1 wins in the Sportsman 500cc, Classic 250cc and Classic 500cc Expert classes. Some 352 riders from all across the United States, Canada, and even England were on hand for the second day of the two-day extravaganza of Vintage motocross, to test their skills on the Dick Mann-designed course. Few, though, were as successful as Skarpohl, who contested four classes on the day. Skarpohl's only setback came in the Over 40 class, in which a series of crashes led to a 13-3 tally. With the checkered flag waving just 10 feet from his front wheel in moto two, Skarpohl fell; this allowed Washington's Dallas Nyblod to take the moto win, as well as the overall victory. Nyblod, riding a 1974 Yamaha YZ250, dashed to the head of the field in the first Over 40 Expert/Intermediate moto, followed by Skarpohl, Californian Tom McKinney, Montana's Tom Rapp and another of the many former National stars, Washington's Buck Murphy. Skarpohl challenged ':'!yblod's every move and even momentarily took the lead. However, Skarpohl crashed and Nyblod regained the lead and held it to the finish. Moto two was also Nyblod's, although it took Skarpohl's aforementioned finish-line folly in order to achieve his lone overall win on the day. McKinney, who trailed Nyblod to the finish in moto one, did the same in moto two, as he also got around the fallen Skarpohl at the finish. Skarpohl remounted to salvage third, barely edging the former Can-Am factory-supported Murphy and former Bultaco teamster Rapp, the fifthplace finisher. Overall, Nyblod led the way via I-I placings, followed by McKinney (2-2), Murphy (4-4), Rapp (3-5) and Arizona's Roger Kenyon (7-6). In the adjoined Intermediate class, Bultaco-mounted Californian Robert Stuscavage used a 2-1 tally to take home the top brass, followed by Nevada's Toby Young. The two riders swapped moto wins, but the overall fell Stuscavage's way after a mototwo shootout in his favor. Christian 60 AUGUST 28, 2002' c: U c: I • Otero trailed the duo in both motos for third overall, ahead of Curt Fournier (4-4) and Jerry Visman (5-7) in the 31-rider field. Skarpohl wasted little time in taking command of the first Sportsman 500cc Expert moto, although he did have CZ-mounted Oregonian Jim Row to deal with. Row kept the pressure on Skarpohl after overcoming a midpack start; Row first had to overtake the likes of Rapp and Aaron Hohman before challenging Skarpohl. However, Skarpohl took the win, followed by Row, Rapp, Hohman and Alex Reed. Row took the lead in moto two and then held it until the final lap, when Skarpohl found a way past Row to win the moto and the overall. Row's day did get better, however, as the rider from Oregon City got the best of Honda rider David Germain in the competitive Open Age Expert class. In moto one, Germain found a way past Rowand got the checkered flag first. Row took the lead at the snap of the rubber band in moto two and then held off all of Germain's advances. Germain, who was aboard the same 1974 Honda CR125 on which he earlier dominated the Sportsman 125cc Expert class, finished second overall with a 1-2 tally. BSA rider Wesley Poole (4-3) thumped to third overall, ahead of fellow Californian Chris Wilkes and Canada's Mark Roler. Reigning Sportsman Open Twin Expert class champion Chad Mcintosh showed just why he carries the number-one plate in the class by handily winning both motos aboard his sa no 1967 Triumph-powered Rickman, finishing ahead of Clark Sumner and Tri-BSA-mounted Mike Atkins. McIntosh also won the Premier 500cc Expert class overall, this time riding his Matchless-powered Rickman, although Robert Poole topped the first moto after Mcintosh's n _ VIr S (Above) Mark Skarpohl was the day's top perfonner at the Chehalis Classic, round 12 of the AHRMAlSpeed & Sport National Vin1age MX Series, scoring the Classic 250cc, Classic 500cc and Sportsman 500cc Expert victories. (R19htl Callfomlan Chad Mcintosh posted a pair of overall wins at The Fann, topping the Premier 500Cc and Sportsman Open TwIn Expert classes. first-turn crash. Poole, Robert Doran, Canada's Ken Burningham and Dave Janiec filled the top five overall. Former Grand National Champion Dick Mann was on hand to contest the Over 60 Expert class and was well on his way to victory in moto one when he took a nasty tumble and, although not seriously injured, decided to call it a day. Mann was riding extremely fast until his crash, as was Honda-mounted Dick Stidham, who won both motos and garnered the overall win, followed by Duane Spence and John Huegel.
