Brock Sellards was strong again in Millville, going 3-4 for third overall. and held down third behind Stewart and Langston after the first lap, and right behind him was the first-moto winner, Reed. For the next seven laps, Walker managed to keep Reed behind his Pro Circuit/Simple Green/Kawasaki KX 125 until making a small mistake that let Reed by him. Walker also mentioned that he started feeling his clutch go away, but he still managed to hold off Sellards, who turned up the heat the last few laps. Rounding out the top five overall was Team Honda's Ernesto Fonseca. The former 125cc East and West Coast Supercross Champion seemed to spend much of both motos stuck behind other riders. In the first moto, Fonseca spent a lot of time behind Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Eric Sorby before passing him for fourth. From there, Fonseca hunted down Sellards and spent the rest of the race eating his dirt, eventually finishing out the race in that spot. Fonseca found himself in a similar position early in the second moto right behind Sellards in sixth. He stayed close to the KTM rider for most of the race, but started to ease up a bit late in the race, eventually taking the checkered flag fifth, moving up one spot after Langston crashed. "It was really one-lined, and I think that's what made it tough," Fonseca said. "I came from far back in the first moto; I was a lot faster than Brock, but the track was kind of one-lined and hard to pass. "The second moto was kind of the same thing," Fonseca said. "I don't know, it's been kind of a weird season for me outdoors. Hopefully things will go better for me in the last two nationals. " Team Suzuki's Branden Jesseman struggled a little bit at Spring Creek. After landing a string of podium finishes lately, Jesseman held down the second-place position in the points standings going into the race, but after a couple of bad starts - 10th in the first moto and 13th in the second - he dropped down a spot, swapping places with Reed. Jesseman could only make little progress in both motos, climbing to just eighth in the first moto and 12th in the second. Chris Gosselaar, on the Amsoil/Dr. Ma rten s/ J ou rneys/H ond a - ba cked CR125, finished out the day seventh overall after going 13-6. Gosselaar spent the entire first moto making up for a 19th-place start, but gated much better in the second moto. Gosselaar settled into eighth place off the start, ran down Shae Bentley for sev- Blastin' benns and maldn' history: Stewart, it seems, can't be stopped. The second-moto start belonged to Stewart, while Reed was mired In the pack. enth and then went after Fonseca for sixth. Gosselaar closed in on Fonseca but ran out of time when the checkered flag came out. Gosselaar's teammate Michael Byrne ended up finishing out the day eight overall with a 9-10 tally, while Bentley (16-8) and West Coast 125cc Supercross Champion Travis Preston rounded out the top 10 overall. eN Sellerds; 5. Upcoming Rounds: Round 11 - Binghamton, New Yorl<, Augus125 Round 12 - Delmont, Pennsylvania, September 1 my Own Race: 125cc ~@ Travis Preston Bad starts hindered Preston's progress at Spring Creek, but he did have some success making up for his slow getaways. In the first moto, Preston rounded the first lap in 28th place, but he clawed and scratched his way through the pack to finish 11 th, fight behind Danny Smith. In the second moto, Preston gated a little better but was still 22nd after the first lap. Once again, Preston went into damage control and fought his way up to 13th before all was said and done. His efforts paid off, as he just did crack the top 10 overall. 'j) @~ Shane Bess This young Suzuki rider was back on the track after breaking his collarbone at the Southwick National, and he rode well, although his final results would not indicate that. In the first moto, Bess was running inside the top 10, then slipped back to 11th when he started dropping off the pace rapidly and eventually pulled off. According to his tuner, Tim McAdams, Bess was feeling good until he got out of shape in the whoops and tweaked his shoulder. Bess started the second moto and was running as high as 15th before pulling off, deciding that his ailing shoulder had had enough. lJ @ Larry Ward After fmishing on the podium at the previous round, Moto XXX/DGY's Larry Ward struggled at Spring Creek. The Yamaha rider gated poorly in both motos and found the track hard to pass on. Ward ended up going 14-]5 on the day for 14th overall. ®~ Kelly Smith 3-D Racing's Kelly Smith got off to a great start, but things quickly fell apart for the Yamaha YZ250F-mounted rider. Smith nailed the holeshot in the first moto and held down fourth place after the first lap, but during the second lap, while running fifth, Smith pulled off the and rode into the mechanic's area with what appeared to be bike problems. Smith did not start the second moto. cue I ... n e _ os • AUGUST 28,2002 15
