Ezra Lusk (11) was a model of concentration on the start line, his teammate Stephane Roncada (21) was too • but the Frenchman was concentrating on having fun at Lusk's expense. Lusk finished third overall, Roncada 10th. (Above) Sebastien Tortelll used 3-4 moto finishes to grab the last spot on the podium. CRF450R rider held down second place the whole way but had to really fight for it. At first it was Ferry giving him trouble before the Yamaha rider fell, and then it was Tortelli, who came from well back to chase down Ramsey. But Ramsey played tough to get and just did keep the Frenchman at bay till the finish. "I came up on Nathan and it was tough to pass him, but he was just holding his lines, and not making any mistakes," Tortelli said of Ramsey. Ramsey again got a good jump in the second mota, settling into second place behind Carmichael, but this time Ramsey couldn't withstand the pressure, eventually getting passed by Ferry, Lusk, Tortelli and Mike laRocco. "The first mota went really good, guys were on me all the time, but I was able to push it a little bit." Ramsey said. "The second mota, I don't know, I kind of had a bad two or three laps to begin with and maybe got into a bad pace; I couldn't really pick it up. I'm kind of bummed, but it could've been worse." By taking the overall win and adding 47 more points to his overall tally, Stewart increased his series lead to 94 points over Chad Reed and now stands a good chance at wrapping things up next week at Broome-Tioga, in Binghamton, New York. But Stewart's win at Spring Creek didn't come easily - at least in the first mota. where he was flat-out beaten to the checkered flag by Boost Mobile/Yamaha!Troy Racing's Reed. Stewart grabbed the lead off the start. but Reed, his series-long rival. quickly settled into second place. and the race was on. At first, it looked as though Stewart might start pulling away from Reed, but every time Stewart gained a bike Ie nth or two here and there on Reed. the Yamaha rider would quickly eat it back up. Reed continued to hammer on Stewart relentlessly. which perhaps caused him to make a mistake in the very tricky whoop section of the track, where Stewart bobbled and then it was obvious that Stewart had thrown in the towel. "I was taking a lot of chances in the first mota. since my front end was washing out." Stewart explained. "I was haVing problems with the front end and decided to let Chad go. He was riding well and I thought I should make some changes up front and get ready for the next mota. I wanted to be smart and not make mistakes like what happened to me at Dallas this year [where he crashed and threw away a sure 125cc supercross title)." Reed went on to take the win some 15 seconds ahead of Stewart. Reed pounced. It's not very often that Stewart gets passed. so Reed tried to take advantage of that by trying to sprint away from the former leader. but to no avail. Instead, Stewart stayed right on the Yamaha rider's rear fender. For the next three laps, Stewart tried everything in the book to get the lead back. and he succeeded once. only to lose it again less than a lap later. Still. Stewart persisted and kept after Reed for many laps until Reed started opening up a small lead. Sur· prisingly, Reed's lead grew and grew until it was over five seconds, and cue I e n e ...
