main but was able to hang on and take third overall. Florida's Dalton [fJ@[][}@5J @DfJY7 @fz@D@ [][}@\!A!l~ [PffJ~7] f13[lffJD[Ji] Myers rounded out the top five on his Cobra. Myers had a fourth-place finish in the main to take fifth overall. CN SHC Finals Ponca City, OIdabDmD Kyle Chisholm has been establishing himself on the Amateur circuit for quite a while now and, as it turns out, he's no slouch in the classroom, either. By earning straight As on his report card (with hardly a B in sight, anywhere!), and then backing that up with overall qualifier wins in both the 125cc Stock Intermediate and 125cc Open Non-Pro (0-16) classes, followed by top-five finishes in both such finals, he was an easy winner of this year's award. To what does he attribute his academic success when he's gone so often racing? "Usually, whenever we go to big races, I let my teachers know and stuff, and I call my friends from the track to get the current work and do it there," says the eighth-grader from Seminole, Florida. "I wanna try and get the highest grade I can, not just pass, because you never know - 1 could get injured or something." He gives credit for his on-track success to lots of practice, including riding with his occasional practice partner, fellow Floridian James Stewart Jr. Kyle said he'd like to thank all the people who help him both in racing and at school, including Team Green Kawasaki, Fox, Oakley, Pro Circuit, IMS, CTi2, Engine Ice, Twin-Air, Creative Graphics, Hinson, Renthal, Maxima, Ust Designs, Dunlop, F1..JIo\X, his mechanic Dave, and his mom and dad. Steve Cox Carolina, was also very fast in the 65cc Stock (9-11) final. He ended up taking second in the main, ahead of Landon Currier and Taylor Johnson. The 50cc Modified (7-8) class was also loaded with 72 riders, necessitating two divisions. When all was said and done, however, AJ <;atanzaro, from Middlefield, Connecticut, had just plain checked out on everyone, winning every moto on his Polini. And he did it without breaking a sweat, as AJ went an uncontested 1-1-1. Texan Jacob Turbyfill just got better and better as the week went on, eventually finishing second to Catanzara. The Cobra-mounted rider, Turbyfill, went 4-3 in his division races and finished things off with a second in the run-off to take second overall, Luke Hobson, from Tupelo, Mississippi, also had success in the 50cc Modified (7-8) class, The Cobra rider went 1-3 in the diviSIon races and took third in the main for a wellearned third overall_ Finishing out the top five was New Jersey's Joey Peters and Ohio's Walker Brightwell_ The 50cc (4-6) class was made up of 53 youngsters who were eager to do battle on the Ponca City track, but only one rider took home that coveted number-one trophy, and that rider was North Carolina's Tyler McSwain_ The young Cobra pilot won everything in sight, topping both his quali- Results: July 2a-August 3, 2002 P/W 51 (4-6) STK: I. Trent, from Talbott, Tennessee, won his first qualifier moto, but had problems in his second qualifier moto, finishing 12th, which was just good enough to transfer him to the main. But Talbott had proven in his first heat race that he was a contender in the final. And that he was. Talbott took second, ahead of Dawson Draycott of Texas, Talbott's 1-122 tally was good enough for fourth overall. Draycott, however, came away with second overall, after posting 2-1-3 moto finishes. Ohio's Hunter Brightwell took fifth in the Mike Alessi had a good week in Oklahoma, topping the 85cc Stock and Modified (12-131 classes, the Supermini class, and finishing second In the 85cc Open Modified class to Villopoto. cue •• n e _ S • AUGUST 28. 2002 25
